Dad was piloting his airplane from Florida back to Illinois, when engine trouble struck over western Kentucky near the "Land between the Lakes" area.

The plane went down short of where dad was targeting to land it, in a densely wooded area. 4 of the 5 people aboard, all family, were killed and only a 7 year old dressed for Florida weather survived.

She trekked 3/4 of a mile in the darkness, through brush and dense woods full of briars, barefoot and in shorts, no coat, to the house of a man. . . and knocked on the door. . .

Read the story. My heart goes out to this 7 year old who lost both her parents, her sister, and a cousin in this crash. . .

Probably not, even if it hadn't flipped over on its top. The area is extremely remote and the pilot had radioed that he was having problems. Not many people ever survive small aircraft crashes. That little girl is very brave to go for help!

I know for a fact flying around here in the winter can be bad.     One day when I was taking flying lessons, I went up to Ace Airport to take a lesson.  My instructor told me it was to bad.     I said why not. we got low clouds around 1,500 feet and you can see over 10 miles.

OK, the instructor said, I show you just how bad it is.      I went out an pre-flighted the plane, we started the plane and off we went.  We went one go-around and when we landed the plane was covered with ice, in some place 1/4 inch deep.     We could not have keep the plane up very long with that ice condition.  :trustme:
