I have no problems dealing with people who have or haven't gone to college but you have a problem with people who have adopted and you would never accept an adoptive child as one of your own. No, it wasn't my way or the highway. We all had rules to follow and they were expected to be followed or one would lose their job and that would have been even me if I didn't follow those rules. Just a reasonable explanation would be fine.  You have no symbols in the real world to use when you say something and I'm sure you can do it here if you try.  As for the terms of endearment if not used in a sarcastic manner they are fine.
