I just finished watching a documentary with the title of this thread, and let me tell you I was enthralled.

How in the hell is this guy not dead? He's going on 75 years old and with all the hell and shit he has stirred in his lifetime, not to mention the hard core drugs he has abused, he's still alive and playing.

The poor bastard doing the filming and questioning of Baker during the film ends up getting the silver handle end of a cane across the nose for his efforts, leaving him pissed off and bloodied.

The man is a drummer of unmatched talent, but he seems to have the personality of a bag of shaken rattlesnakes. No wonder he and Jack Bruce fought all of the time, and Eric Clapton wanted out of the two bands he was in with him. (Cream and Blind Faith).

He's on his 4th wife, (and that may be over by now for all I know), and is virtually penniless; which is why he is still doing shows. He had a large farm in Africa and in excess of 30 polo horses, but had to sell it all.

It's no wonder that so many of rock and rolls historic musicians refused to work with the man unless they were forced to. And he considers Clapton his best friend, while you get the feeling Clapton wants to stay as far away from him as he can, due to the substance abuse, irrational behavior, and constant arguing he instigates. Clapton does obviously harbor some personal conflict surrounding how he truly feels about Baker, and was very measured in his responses about him in the documentary. I got a sense he wants to help him, and perhaps has done so already, but its almost like he feels having him around is like inviting a junkie to watch over your valuables.

Great documentary with interviews of Santana, Clapton, Winwood, and a host of others that have performed and recorded with him over the decades his career spans. Even his own children want little to nothing to do with him, as they so eagerly state within the film.

If you are a musician, a fan of music, or a fan of Cream, this is a must see. It'll fascinate you to say the least.

In the beginning I felt sorry for the old man sitting in a recliner, and clearly pissed off. But about 20 minutes into it I began to change my mind.

He wrote a book called "Hellraiser", which I am going to see if I can find locally or on line in the US. It ought to be a good read. . .

The above is an article from Rolling Stone in October of last year, which is an interview with him. His answers are fairly in line with a lot of the replies he gave the guy interviewing him for the film.

Was it a PBS thing?  If so I can probably get it off the site 'cause they sell them sometimes.

It's available via DVD on Netflix.  I just looked.

I figured it would be. Don't know what they charge to view it, but if you have 1.5 hours to kill, I could think of worse ways to do so.

Don't do Netflix, we'd rather buy them.  I'm sure it will turn up somewhere.  Time to go Amazon shopping I guess....

What did you have to lay out for it? I may buy it myself just to watch when I get to be 70 or so; as a reminder of what I don't want to be at that age. . .
