Madison County Emergency Management Agency
Warning Division

Madison County, along with much of Indiana and Illinois, will likely experience severe weather later today and tonight. Madison County is currently in a zone of "Moderate Risk" while locations as close as Marion and Kokomo are in a "High Risk" zone. This is the first, and so far only, time this year that the SPC has issued a High Risk warning.

The current expectation is for a cluster of strong storms to develop later this afternoon west of Chicago and move rapidly eastward or ESE into Indiana. The principal threats with this cluster are high straight-line winds, and tornados.

The high straight-line winds may be in the form of a "Derecho". A derecho has high winds on a broad front that persists for hours and can cover hundreds of miles. A derecho last year, that began in Indiana, moved clear to the east coast in about six hours, doing extensive damage all the way. Models currently suggest that a derecho may move out of the Chicago area around 8 PM, reaching Ohio in five hours or less. Winds with the derecho may exceed 70 MPH. Unlike thunderstorm downdraft winds, high winds from a derecho may continue to blow for 15 - 20 minutes before declining. Extensive damage can result.

The tornado threat is expected to be highest shortly after the storms develop in western Illinois. In this regard the situation may be similar to those that produced the El Reno Tornado in Okalahoma on May 31 of this year, killing several people. Those storms exploded from nothing to more than 50,000 feet in a few minutes. Similar explosive growth is expected later today west of Chicago.

While scattered thunderstorms may develop earlier, the most likely time for severe weather in Madison County appears to be between 8 PM and midnight. More precise timing will be possible after the storms initiate. StormNet observers will be needed before the storms move into Madison County. All observers should be prepared to check into the net on 146.82 ready to roll.

All parties should secure any loose items that could be blown away and generally "batten the hatches."

It's headed this way. Forecasters are warning us to expect the worst, although most of the heavy stuff either veers NE into Pennsylvania, or SE into Maryland. I sometimes feel guilty about hoping it misses us again.

The skies are on fire out here right now. Thunder is rumbling in the distance and I am estimating it is around 10 miles away at the moment.

It is coming quickly though. Severe T-Storm warning flashing on my all hazard screen right now.

So far all we've gotten is a few drops of rain but east of us is a different story from the way the sky is lighting up in that direction. I think we've been missed again.

I suspect the wind missed us for the most part, but not the lightening, thunder, and rains.

I did unplug both 'puters last night before going to bed.  I hope my friend who lives in Montpelier is on FB today saying everything is ok with her I can't find her phone number to call her.   Found her old one she had in Daleville though.

We just got HAMMERED here in the DC/Baltimore area.

Tornado warnings going off everywhere. Reports of tornadoes on the ground in Olney and Leonardtown. There was live TV coverage of a waterspout on the Patuxent crossing from St. Mary's county over to Calvert.
