I would love to be able to see them live.  I could sit for hours and watch drum or drum and bugle corps perform and never get tired of it.

Yes. I'm not a musician, just a listener. I love classical and a lot of other kinds of music, but the sounds that stir something deep in me come from drums and bagpipes.

There's a long-running program on Maryland Public TV that I've taped and watched over and over -- Ballykissangel. It's about a tiny town in Ireland (filmed there) and the lives of the people living there -- which center mostly around the Catholic church and the pub, located a short distance away.

There's one scene, in one particular program, that makes me cry every single time I watch it -- I know what's coming and I can fell the emotion welling up in me: It's a local talent show, and the children are  on stage clogging. Then a boy of about 12 begins fiddling, but is a little scared, so the schoolmaster signals to the drums, and they thunder in and the result is magic, and I'm crying!

As for bagpipes, the first time I saw the old Star Trek movie where Spock died and they put his coffin adrift in space to the sound of bagpipes playing Amazing Grace, I cried like a baby.  (Really embarrassed my daughter.)

Excellent, no missed catches in spite of the stiff wind which, I think, would affect how hard the sticks might have to be thrown whether against or with it.  I guess even a cross wind might affect it.

A very good friend who is an IT guy at the university where I spend my time is a piper.

Every time we get together, the neighbors enjoy the skurling of the pipes.

He is quite good. Has won several individual piping competitions, as well as being part of a corps that plays and competes.

He is in demand for funerals, as you probably can imagine.

That's one instrument I've never had the pleasure of trying to play but hope to get the chance to at some point.  I just hope I have enough wind for it if I ever do get the chance.

As for Ballykissangel, no, I don't know the episode -- it's about halfway through the series, which is not all that long.  If you're familiar with it, I think it's after after Niveh had the miscarriage and was helping out at the school -- before Assumpta died and Father Peter left. If you're not familiar with the story line and can watch it from the beginning, you'll be hooked.

Not familiar with the series at all but maybe I'll watch it online if the link to do that is still good.

We bought it, Holland's Opus, and I've watched it several times.
