Actress Patty Duke :reap: HARVESTED :reap: am at the age of 69, of sepsis from a ruptured intestine.

:spooked:

That has to be a nasty way to go.  I wonder if she waited too long to get to the doctor.  That certainly sounds like something that should have been preventable.

My uncle had a intestine rupture come out of the blue.  He had no idea of it at all.  He went into the hospital and they open him up and patched the tear.  When he woke up his doctor said he had no problem fixing it, but if an infection set in and got into his blood stream.  He had a 50/50 chance of dying and they didn't have any way of fighting it.      He had no infection and he live well into his 80s.

Wow!

I guess Patty Duke landed on the wrong side of the 50-50 odds.

That's too bad, I really liked her. She was one of the few child actresses who transitioned to adult/older adult roles gracefully..

Wow, agree Locutus on the 50/50. I had never heard of this.

The same thing can happen with a ruptured appendix or infection that becomes septic in the blood. It is less common now because of the antibiotics we have now. Older people are more susceptible, no surprise there, but the infection can overwhelm anyone in the right circumstances.

That's pretty scary because my appendix had partially ruptured when I finally landed in the hospital to have it removed.  It took them 3 days post operation to get my fever down.  They wouldn't let me go until it did.  :spooked:
