Straight from the beaches of south Florida, the strange strikes again.

A man out for a morning stroll along the beach discovered an eye the size of a softball this week.

Swordfish, squid, whale, alien? Swordfish gets my vote.  :biggrin:

It wasn't a giant squid or a tuna or a bigeye thresher shark..

The giant eyeball that washed up last week in Pompano Beach most likely belonged to a swordfish, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced Monday.

"Experts on site and remotely have viewed and analyzed the eye, and based on its color, size and structure, along with the presence of bone around it, we believe the eye came from a swordfish," said Joan Herrera, curator of collections at the FWC's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg. "Based on straight-line cuts visible around the eye, we believe it was removed by a fisherman and discarded."

The softball-sized eyeball was found Wednesday by a man on this regular morning walk along the beach.The mystery attracted newsmedia from Europe, Canada and across the United States and marine biologists and members of the public speculated on what creature it came from.

Swordfish are abundant off the southeast Florida coast, supporting active commercial and recreational fisheries.
