Personally, I think it is pretty strange, but I know a few Mormons who may very well be the nicest people I have ever met.

Again, if Romney is so "vetted", then why is he not following the precedent his own father set in releasing his tax returns for 10+ years? ? ?

Any candidate for POTUS must undergo an in depth background check to ensure they meet the qualifications for the office for which they aspire. If they do not then they will not be able to run.
If they pass then they are free to declare their candidacy.

As for a formal "vetting", there is no such requirement outside of those the various parties undertake when selecting candidates to hoist. Thus no legal requirement.

The constitution holds no such requirement for the office of POTUS.

Moreover, if it did, could you imagine the gridlock that would result given the current political chasm that divides this country?    It would take a decade to get a single candidate "vetted", and a lot of them would expire during the process!
