I was sorting through some mail that was not bills that had accumulated on my desk, and came across a publication from the company that supplies water in this county where I live in Northern VA (a county of more than a million people).  The service is good, and believe, me I appreciate that. I remember the years when there was not enough rain and my mother always worried that the well would run dry.

Anyway, back to the water company publication. I usually quickly scan it and throw it away, but this time something on the back page caught my eye: "If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water." - Loren Eisley, The Immense Journey

Imagine that! A person from the water company who reads and quotes Loren Eisley, now deceased, formerly well known anthropologist and history professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

Eisley was one of my heroes when I was a girl. I wrote to him -- don't remember now why but imagine it was something I read in a book by him that somebody gave me: The Unexpected Universe. To my surprise, he answered my letter -- it wasn't a form letter: it was a personal letter to me. I still have the book -- went and found it, and there was the letter, inside.

Incredible memory to recall, Libby.

Makes me smile, too.

I can remember years ago my shallow well quit pumping.  The water level in it had dropped below 28 feet.  No pitcher pump or shallow well hand pump of a electric shallow pump water that low.

I had to put in a electric deep well pump set at 75 feet to keep the water coming.  But a lot of old wells in the old days went dry with the old hand pumps, especially when the leathers got dried out or wore out.  Remember how you had to prime them with water to get them to pump.  Or how much pumping you had to do to fill a horse tank every day or two.   So much for the "good old days".

We're seeing just how important water is this summer.

Law of Logical Argument - Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.  ;)

"You've probably noticed that opinion pollsters go out of their way to include as many morons as possible in surveys ... I think it's dangerous to inform morons about what their fellow morons are thinking. It only reinforces their opinions. And the one thing worse than a moron with an opinion is lots of them." -- Scott Adams

In other words: Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.  ;)

"It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." -- Upton Sinclair

"Hitler is gone, but if the majority of our fellow citizens are more susceptible to the slogans of fear and race hatred than to those of peaceful accommodation and mutual respect among human beings, our political liberties remain at the mercy of any eloquent and unscrupulous demagogue." -- S. I. Hayakawa
