No, it is because standards have changed. In 1960 the standard was one yard of material was 36 inches long and 36 inches wide. The current standard is now 36 inches long and 45 inches wide.

Tricky! But then I don't do much sewing.

Here's one for you ...

If you rip saw a 2X4X8 on a standard table saw exactly down the middle, what will be the dimensions of the resulting two pieces?

  I think that would be 1 1/2 inches by 1 3/4 inches.  Today's 2x4 are actually 1 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches.

You are right about today's 2X4's. But you're wrong about the dimensions after sawing. You're forgetting a crucial detail.

you would have two 8' pieces...1 7/16" D x 1 11/16" W  providing you had a 1/8" wide blade...

I think there is still a missing dimension there!

When I first started building furniture as a hobby, that saw kerf width messed me up more times than I care to admit.

Shouldn't there be a 96" dimension in that answer?  :icon_twisted:

I think that's a given since I specified that it was a rip cut.

My  house was built in 1880 and the 2X4 are 2X4 and they are made from maple, walnut, hickory, ash and I even have found some made of cherry.     It is made from any wood in the woods around my town.  I was told there was a saw mill between Anderson In. and my town and my house was made with green lumber.   Just try to drive a nail in to one boards now.

Doesn't it always boil down to money? Just saying!

It certainly does here in this country.

I knew it wouldn't be 1 X 2 because I know a 2 X 4 isn't really 2 X 4 but I would have had to get one out and measure it. My dad was a good carpenter and my husband used to do a lot of that type of thing so I have learned from them.
