Hey, Horse!

If I see that snow dance again, I might just have to find a way to come after you!

Sunday morning I got on I77 in WV, headed south to I81 north, then I64 to Charlottesville VA, then on to Fredericksburg before I ran out of the snow.

SEVEN FRIGGIN HOURS IN A HEAVY, WET DRIVING SNOW!

All in all it took 10 hours for what is normally a 6 hour trip.

I'm done. I put all the regalia into it's chest and it will not see the light of day until November of this year. . .

Wow. That's the route I take, then get on I-95 N at Fredericksburg. Cannot imagine what it would be like in "heavy, wet driving snow."  :spooked:

I go on Route 3 east at Fredericksburg to Dahlgren to 301 north across the Nice bridge. I stay off the beltway that way.

That bridge really scares me.

About 3 years ago I drove to Bluefield and took along my friend Shirley, who lives in Delaware. A friend dropped her off at my house. The trip to Bluefield was fun; we had a lot of catching up to do. But coming back! :spooked:  Because the person who drove Shirley to my house was tied up, and Shirley said she absolutely had to get home, I volunteered to drive her into Maryland where we could meet up with her friend, who would drive her the rest of the way. I followed your route, got on 301 east. Had never been that way before.

It was a little too late for comfort when I got my first glimpse of Nice bridge.   Could not believe my eyes. Didn't look to the right or left as I drove, up, up, up, and then down, down, down, very slowly. By the time I got to the big motel on the right as you get into Waldorf, it was almost dark. Her friend was waiting and wanted to buy us dinner, but I said no, I needed to get on home. By the time I got back to that  bridge, it WAS DARK, almost no traffic (no one to follow) so I drove across it very slowly. It was the same on 301 - almost no traffic, so I drove slowly and carefully until I got back to Fredericksburg. I almost cried with joy when I spotted the sign for I-95. It took another 30-45 minutes to get home, but I didn't care. I was in familiar territory.

The next day I could hardly move.

That really is a scary bridge. Even in broad daylight.

On the way down last week, I was going north on I77 when I saw signs that warned of trouble after the East River Mountain tunnel. So I got off in Bastian and took old route 52 across the mountain. I hadn't been that way in 40 years and it damn near scared me to death. There are places with no guardrail and a 2000 foot drop.

I found out later that a massive rock slide had shut down I77 between Bluefield and Princeton. Last I heard, it was still shut down.

Here's a clip of the rockslide taken by a cell phone camera by someone who was there.

And to the other topic of conversation, the Harry Nice Bridge.  You get a nice view of this bridge sometimes flying into DCA.

(You can dismiss the bubble in the middle by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner after it appears)
