Still grappling with a local suicide. 16 years-old. I selfishly can't imagine what I'd do if this was my child...

:'(

Yes.

I think I know the situation.

It is a hard thing to understand. A teenage friend of my kids killed himself (this was about 30 years ago) and none of the kids had an inkling of what he was going to do. I am not sure they ever knew why he did it.

It is completely mind boggling when I hear about such things....very heart breaking.  The thought of any young person doing such a thing is beyond me, let alone the thought of my own children doing this.....it would tear me apart.

It's hard to believe that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for youth ages 10-24...and often, there are no warning signs. I didn't know this young man personally; however, it appears he was outgoing, active, athletic, and popular. Of course environmental influences play a significant role, so it's hard to say exactly what the impetus was for him to carry out the lethal act.

We often don't know the "why" behind their actions or ever have real closure. :(

Did anyone hear the news that Vi Ripken was kidnapped this morning? Apparently the kidnapper had her gagged and tied up in the back of her car and took her towards Essex Maryland and was spotted by someone. He gave a cover story that it was his mom or grandmother and he was taking her to the hospital. The person didn't buy it (I guess because you don't bind and gag someone on the way to the hospital  ) and called the cops. The kidnapper took her back to Harford county and abandoned her and the vehicle. He never asked for a ransom, but I think he chickened out.

Vi Ripkin is former Oriole player Cal Ripkin's mother.

It's not so much what you see externally that can be the indicator. The fact is that age group is typically the area in our development when hormone levels go off the charts, testosterone too, and as well all know both of those things do not make for sound thought processes; and in fact both have been clinically shown to impair judgement and the thought process. We've known about it for decades but we have yet to take that knowledge to the next level and understand what to do about it.

Yes, the phase is inherent toward physical development but despite our similarities in biological and chemical make-up, each of us is unique and each of us experience a very different "reaction" on a physical and mental level when it comes to this phase of our growth.  And as a result every once in "X" number of cases, someone doesn't react "properly" and unless someone within their circle of trust is a trained psychologist it is going to go unnoticed until something like this happens.

It's always sad and it is a terrible event to say the least, but we have no one to blame for it outside of society's abject failure to take the knowledge we have and learn what to do with it.

The lion's share of us have a hard enough time keeping up with immunizations, wellness checks, braces, etc., financially. Adding mental health to that burden isn't in the cards for most of us, thanks to the state of healthcare in this country and the draconian entities healthcare insurers have become.

About the best thing we can hope to do is to create, nurture, and sustain a very close relationship with our children. One that is so close it will drive separation anxiety if we are not careful. Only then will we have an increased ability to recognize the subtle clues that might tell us that inclusion of a mental health check and chemical screen analysis may be necessary to prevent the "out of balance" chemistry situations that in the opinion of many, contribute to such tragedies. . .

A mindreader is at a nightclub one night and decides to give a small demonstration of her abilities.

First, she reads the mind of the lead guitarist: "Wow, look at all the cute chicks who showed up tonight! Good crowd!"

Then the drummer: "Lots of people showed up tonight...Great! we're going to make good money tonight"

Then the Keyboard player: "All three of these guys have no appreciation of my talent...What a bunch of losers"

Finally, the Bass player: "C...G...C...G..."

You know, as much as Ex and I disagree I think he would do something like this for a dog he owned.

Goin to the fair today. . .

That's one thing that I miss about living in more northerly climes.  It's just too damn hot to even think about wandering around at a fair down here in the summertime.  That's why all of our major fairs are in the winter months.

They got lucky because the hot weather left for the past week. It was actually pretty nice out there today. Had a corn dog, elephant ear, and assorted other bad for you fair food.

And it appears we left just in time. I wasn't aware the stage coach show was going on or I'd have been in the middle of what just happened. (A stage coach flipped over during the show and several ambulances and other rescue personnel are there right now).  :spooked:
