The Troll

Anybody think it is too early to put fertilizer down on the lawn???

To me if you grass is green that means it's living and could be feed.

Crab grass you don't want to put the  premergent killer on too soon or too late.  From what I know Crab Grass germinates when the ground temputure get 55 to 60 degrees 2 to 3 inches below the ground.  What you are seeing I would say is not Crab Grass, frost and freezing kills the grass.  What a home owner has to do is kill the seeds as they open.

Killing Crab Grass in a mature lawn is a bitch, you can't put anything on it that won't kill the grass.  :trustme:  Troll the Crab Grass fighter.     I have given up on the fight and turned it over to TruGreen and and they have done a good job.

Don't let them sell all of the treatments, they will break you.  One thing I don't buy is the grub killer.  I don't have any brown spots and I don't want to kill the lighting bugs.

In my area, (Maryland, SE of Wash., DC) we put down crabgrass preventer at the first hint of Forsythia blossoms.

Yeah, I pretty much figured it out earlier, when I went out and took a good look at what is greening up and emerging. It isn't crabgrass yet. . .

So, once I did that I decided to spread some new seed where the city plow raked off the sod over the winter. (   ) I then applied pellets containing startup fertilizer and moisture retention agents, and topped that off with black earth. The idea being with the rains coming it will give the seeds plenty of moisture and hopefully allow them to germinate once the warmth begins. (I planted cool weather species grass so that should do the trick).

Then, I got out the spreader and gave the entire lawn a shot of spring startup fertilizer. I used it early last year too and my lawn was green way before any of my neighbors were. (The ones that are still here that is).

I figure it ought to give me about 2-3 weeks head start, and once I start seeing crabgrass begin to emerge, I'll hit everything but the newly seeded areas with some crabgrass killer.

I hear yah Troll on the TruGreen thing. I've been wanting to give them a shot at getting my lawn under control, and this may very well be the year that I do it. . . I will not have much time to fool around with it this year, except for weekends. I'll turn it over to them except for the back yard, where lil puppy plays. That I will take care of myself. . .

I have seen a lot of rookies put down crabgrass preventer and then put down grass seed and wonder why the grass didn't come up.

Yeah. . . I have a neighbor who did that last year. The same one out there cutting his grass with the paint stirrer chucked up in his electric drill. . .  :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

On my list for capital expenditure consideration this year:

  • One of those spiked drums to pull behind the tractor
  • One of those drums you fill up with water to roll over the lawn

I looked at Lowes and Menards for them this past fall and winter, to catch them on clearance, but FAILED!

Still hoping, I've got back $32,000 out of the $62,000 I lost to George W's stock market bubble burst.  Only $30,000 to get back.  Nothing is safe to invest in, absolutely nothing is safe.   One of the reasons I hate the Republican Party so much.  They the ones who took off the controls on the crooked companies.

But Obama and the Democrats are sure trying to make a come back even with the road block of the Republicans.
