Anyone here stockpile food? I did when my kids were little, always had three months of food at home except for fresh veggies and milk. Don't do that any more, but sometimes I think it might be a good idea.

As do we. . . we keep 8 to 16 weeks of provisions on hand most times. . . And a generator in case the electricity runs out. . .

It's why we like places like Sam's and Costco.  We usually try to buy in bulk whenever possible.

We always have a stockpile of both frozen and shelf stable foods.   Canned meat isn't the greatest but it's better than not having any at all. I also keep Milnot on hand in case I run out of milk.  Just can't seem to make myself do the powdered milk thing.   Boxed 'taters ain't too bad if you put enough butter and milk in them and would be better than nothing at any rate.  Self raising flour for fried bread and a supply of chicken and beef broth cubes.  We do try to use it through the summer and start over in the fall.  I was caught on a Fri with almost nothing and 3 kids at home when we had the blizzard in '79' and I decided that wasn't going to happen again.

I started because we only had one car and were not close to a bus line or any grocery within walking distance and I would run out of something or other and it was annoying. It came in very handy in 1970 when my husband was out on strike for almost three months. Now we live so close to grocery stores and eat out so much I usually only have a couple weeks worth of food. We don't have the big freezer anymore either. We always bought beef by the quarter or side.

Sort of, I keep canned soup, tuna and veggies on hand and buy them in large quantities when they're on sale. When it's just me at hme sometimes I'll have a can of veggies or soup for a meal. We eat a lot of tuna and soup is a great "cure" for sick kids or comforting when it's cool.

I buy meat in larger quantities b/c it's cheaper, but I don't have a big freezer so not too much, but enough on hand if I don't feel like stopping/going out to the market for frsh stuff. I buy a lot of frozen veggies too, but prefer fresh. Every now and then I don't buy any meat or veggies  and we use up what we have and start over and it lasts about two weeks.

Palehorse - "friend" is a powerful word. I hope I can live up to it.

In "Saving Private Ryan" at the end of the movie, Ryan is kneeling at the tombstone of Capt. Miller. He asks his wife - "Tell me I'm a good man. "

That is all a man really can live for. To be a good man. I hope I can.

Though we have never met face to face, after interacting with you here for so many years and reading your words and postings, I know enough about you to say that we see a lot of things similarly, we share several interests, and to arrive at the conclusion that you are indeed, my friend.

We don't agree on everything, but friends do not have to. That, for me, is an important aspect of friendship; to challenge each other to open our minds and consider the perspectives of others in order to afford each other the opportunity to grow, and to maintain the compassion and level of caring despite our differences, demonstrates the commitment to that friendship.

I know enough about you personally to be comfortable in saying that you are my friend. Friendship is not something that has to be lived up to, but rather something that is earned. You, my friend, have more than earned that title from my perspective, as have a couple of others here. And while circumstances in life may serve to mute that friendship from time to time, it does not tarnish it nor lessen its importance.

You are a good man based upon everything I know about you and have seen from you within this limited genre of social interaction; and should life one day provide us with the means to meet one another and share a drink or break bread, it would be an opportunity I would personally greet with great enthusiasm.  (With a little Karma present I am sure Yes would be playing in the background).

Friends support one another, disagree, agree to disagree, but in the end they come full circle if their intentions are based on the foundation of honesty, caring, and trust. All three of which, like friendship itself, are earned.
