Nothing will take the hardness out of water but a softener (ion exchange) or distillation (boiling to steam).  Since I sold and installed water condition products for around 40 years.  I have found that coffee and tea tastes better with mineral free water.  Soft or distilled water.

On my sink in the kitchen in have soft water on the main faucet and a hard water, carbon filtered cold faucet.  The carbon is to filter out chlorine in the city water.  I always make the tea and coffee out of soft water.  But for a drink of water I drink the hard filtered, chlorine free water.

One more thing, distilled water is sold at any grocery store.  People use in in clothes irons, batteries, evaporators and anything that need mineral free water.  Buy some and make some tea and see how clear it is and good it taste.  There is nothing that will change the taste of tea or coffee in it.  Some high iron well water will make tea and coffee cloudy and taste funny.

Got some mush made for fried mush in the morning, 4 DVD's copied to send to a friend, 20lbs of ground chuck split into pounds and patties and frozen, a flag patch sewn onto hubby's denim jacket, and chicken breasts in the oven for supper.  Now it's time to play on the 'puter for a while.

My wife brought home another car load of stuff from work. (I keep telling her to drive the truck to work so she can carry more stuff).  Anyway, today she brought home a couple of plastic barrels with no tops on them.

I intend to drill a hole near the bottom of these drums, and insert a petcock valve into the holes. Then I will place cheesecloth over the tops and secure it with strapping, and once spring comes I will set them out into the yard to catch rainwater. That way I will have a ready source to water the flowers from, and avoid paying the thieving city for water and sewer charges!!!!

. . . Of course, it will have to rain in order for me to use them. . .

My son did what you have planned.  He didn't bother with the cheese cloth.  But he did put a hose bib faucet on them and he hook up a hose to them and watered his garden.

I was luck the house I bought had a well in it.  I bought a deep well pump, the well is 110 feet deep and put it in the well.  I use it for all outside water use.  At one time I had a 28ft about ground pool it took 21,000 gallons of water fill it.  I filled it more than once.  It took around 2 days to fill it.  It's never ran dry.  It saves on the water and sewer bill big time.

Yep. I plan to daisy chain the two barrels and place them under one of the downspouts coming off the roof. I just have to divert the downspout either by cutting through the side and forming a flap to divert to the barrel, or by cutting it off and running it to the barrels themselves.

Only problem may be the home owners association. . . They may object to it the bastards!  :icon_evil: :icon_evil: :icon_evil: :icon_evil:
