PH - I love your story and I can't wait to see the pic.

Mine was made out of chicken, duck, geese and phesant feathers lol so based on what you just said lol I'm laughing thing of what the headdress would have said about the wearer. Still, I wish I had been smart enough to know how much I'd love to have it now.

Mom made that so that I'd be chief despite the fact that I was a girl. I didn't realize it then but she was molding me. lol...right back to my previous discussion in this thread...think you can share the hankies FTW? ;D

I never met any of her ancestors. That could be because she was elderly herself when I was born. Her parents had passed and by her account her mother had left the life behind in one way ot the other.

As for the rest of your remark; I have everything required including birth/death certificates, certified records, and the original deed from the 1800's from the US Government containing the phrase that "in order to own this property the individual or family must prove they are of Cherokee decent. This property may not be transferred except to direct descendants, or to those of Cherokee descent."

It was due to this phrase that my great grandmother provided certified records to each one of her grandchildren, which have been passed along via deaths since.

For me, it represents the empirical proof of this country's oppression of this nations indigent peoples and racist roots.

I live next to the Cherokee nation in Ok. My grandmother was Cherokee from Senca, Mizzouri. She would never talk to me about the rolls or why we were not on them, like my cousins that are of the Delaware tribe.
When I researched the website for the Cherokee tribe it instructed me that to be added onto the rolls, I would have to produce the birth certs back to the Dawes roles that had the names of the original natives that were recorded with the treaty.

Index to the Final Rolls of Citizens and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory (Dawes). So I have to research all the way back.

Most of this today is tribal driven, since the tribes must register you with the BIA. The Dawes recordings were the government's effort to provide a genetic set of records for the NA's to utilize. The tribes today set up their own procedures and each one is different; some use the Dawes roles, some don't. Those living near to, or maintaining a close relationship with the present day tribes usually find no problem in being recognized.

we are hatching some mantis pods--to release into the wild.  i haven't uploaded yet, but i have pix of an unhatched pod, a hatched pod, and some hatchlings on leaves.
