How the heck do they decide what technology is okay to use?
There are different "sects" for lack of a better word. Different groups have different ideals on technology. Some believe minimal use of technology such as electricity, and vehicles is OK. Some groups are totally against the modern conveniences. The Amish are pretty anti technology. For the most part they drive the horse and buggies, and their farm equipment is mostly man powered. Mennonites... and I'm not totally sure about this.... do have vehicles and do use more of the modern conveniences, but they are very conservative in the way they dress and act. The person who I'm POSITIVE would be able to tell us more about this is Dan Foster. Paging Dan Foster... paging Dan Foster.... come in Dan...  :sos:

Depends on the "order" of which they are a member.

A board of elders determines the tech.

So it's all just politics.
Looks like I've come full circle.

The elders interpret the word of god for the rest of the congregation (to some degree).

Kind of like church elders who control lives in other churches.

Of course the flock can't be allowed to think/interpret for itself...or so it seems...

Well, we've decided to purchase beneficial insects this year. Gardening time is just around the corner. We priced some different insects today. We're definitely getting Lady Bugs, Praying Mantis egg sacks, and some microscopic worms called Nematodes? I guess you're suppose to store them in the refrigorator, until you want them to hatch. The Lady Bugs come to you hatched, but dormant. The Praying Mantis eggs cannot be out of the refrigerator, until we have 70* or higher temperatures. I've always wanted to raise Praying Mantis' from egg to release. They have a very short life span. I think it's going to be really neat, and hopefully it will help the insect problems, we've had out here.

I'm glad you're doing it that way Dex.  Soooo many people use insecticides and they're killing off the beneficial bugs too.

When we first moved here there were a lot of Praying Mantis'. Last year we only had a couple, and the bug situation was horrible well into the Fall. We had HUGE spiders in the basement and yard, mosquitoes, and swarms of flies outside. I attribute that to the fact of not having any Praying Mantis' out there. They eat all kinds of insects. Nematodes is the name of the microscopic worms I referred to earlier. I guess they eat fly larvae, flea eggs, and a bazillion more pesty bugs. We haven't had any problems with fleas (which is a damn miracle),but it would be beneficial to keep them at bay,if they do decide to invade our yard. I can't wait to order them. I've always wanted to see Praying Mantis hatchlings.

We never ever use any kind of poisons in our yard, because of my cats. We have the house sprayed every year, because the house had some termite activity before we bought it. It was treated, and we have it inspected, and treated once a year. The stuff they spray it with is safe for human consumption. We would never use something, we thought would endanger animals ,or the environment. That's just not cool IMO.
