As a former Chicagoan, (born and bred), I have a lot of good friends that live there still. One of them shared a story about Mike Ditka that I found touching. (And before you get on my case about it being about the Bears, I will say I was always, and remain, a Ditka fan; as a player and a coach). Anyway. . . My friend is a professional cartoonist and local raido personality in the Chicagoland area, so here's what he shared:

"Years ago after one of those McCormick Place business conventions I ended up with a group of co-workers at a reception at Ditka's Restuarant... the newer one off Michigan Avenue, not the famous or infamous middle-aged pick-up joint in 1980s River North. A waiter pointed out the Coach to me, and yep, there was Mike Ditka huddled over his drink at his own bar. "Go introduce yourself, he likes to meet people", the waiter offered. "More likely he'll punch me for interrupting his drink", I offered in reply. But the guy was persistent so three of my colleagues and I meekly ventured over. The Coach spun around in his chair and quickly scanned our name tags before greeting each one of us by name. We chatted for a long while. The lady in our group asked "is that your Super Bowl ring?" and he took it of and handed to her saying "yeah it is - not the most important thing in life". Perfect Ditka-ism, and in person at that. Months before this encounter, my dad and I had seen Ditka give a morning speech at a Suburban LIFE newspaper event and it was great. Highly entertaining. It was the last thing me and my dad attended together right before my dad suffered a heart attack that he fortunately survived. So by this point, my old man was in steady if lengthy recovery. Now back at the restaurant, as we are all gabbing away, I mention this to the Coach, about what a great time my dad and I had seeing him that morning - and what happened shortly afterward. Like I said, Ditka spent quite a bit of time with my little work group. Eventually we knew it was time to break away and let him get back to his cigar and his drink. Goodbyes were said, as he once more called us all by name. Then he pulled me back... "Charley, tell your dad I'm saying a prayer for him tonight". That's my Ditka story. The Bears retire his number tonight. God Bless Mike Ditka."

And I have an autographed picture of him hanging in my man-cave. In it he is giving the finger to some fans after having thrown his ABC gum at them for heckling him. I love that picture.

There are a lot of things we won't agree about...but I know about the picture your are talking about...and I am envious.  I have been a Bears fan since Butkus and Sayers...but became a REAL, Die-hard when Sweetness took over in 1975.  Ditka was the perfect coach for that team.....he was the epitome of Bears football.

Yeah, and it has been all DOLTS since the Chiefs scored. 23-7 Dolts with 5 minutes left in the 4th, and the Chiefs backed up on their own 10 yard line.

And Peyton Manning throws an NFL record 51 touchdowns this year, propelling his new team to even greater heights in the process.  8)

If he can carry this through the playoffs, it will be the ultimate revenge for the shitty treatment at the hands of Irsay.

I see Manning quite possibly getting yet another MVP nod this year too.

Despite their win against a hapless team today, I predict the Dolts will be one and done in the playoffs.

And now Peyton Manning has passed for more yards in a single season, than any other quarterback in NFL history; including number of touchdowns as well! He just smoked Drew !  :big grin:

He ought to go ahead and win this years Super Bowl and then retire.  He'll never top that.
