Colts coach Chuck Pagano is dealing with a serious illness that will cause him to miss several games.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Pagano had been feeling fatigued and got blood tests during the bye week, when the illness was diagnosed. The Colts have planned a press conference for this morning at which they will give more details on his medical condition.

Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians will take over as interim head coach while Pagano is out.

Pagano, who will turn 52 on Tuesday, is in his first year as the Colts' head coach. A Colts official told the Indianapolis Star that while Pagano's health issue is a concern, the team is optimistic that he will recover.

UPDATE 9:09 a.m. ET: ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Pagano has been diagnosed with leukemia. Doctors have told him he will be hospitalized for six weeks but that he will make a full recovery and return to coaching.

Wow Thanks Locutus, I was completely unaware of this...

11:35AM EST October 1. 2012 - Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Chuck Pagano has been diagnosed with a form of leukemia and will miss Sunday's game against Green Bay and likely several more games.

An ESPN report said Pagano is in isolation at an Indianapolis hospital and will be hospitalized for about six weeks.

Larry Cripe, Pagano's doctor, said the goal of treatment is to cure the disease and have Pagano return to coaching. But, Cripe added, "The process is long and complicated."

Treatment can extend up to two years.

The Star first reported the illness and that Pagano would likely miss several games while being treated for acute promyelocytic leukemia. According to the American Cancer Society website, "early diagnosis and treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) ... is important because patients with APL may develop serious blood-clotting or bleeding problems. ... Treatment induces remission in 80 to 90% of patients."

Hate to have to break that kind of news, but at least remission rates are quite high with the form of the disease he has.

I have really liked everything I have learned about this guy.  I think he is a good thing for the Colts and the City.  I pray that he has a speedy recovery, although "speedy" for this disease may take a while.

Yup!  Possibly 2 years according to the information you posted.  One has to wonder with a potential two years of treatment if he'll remain in his coaching position, or forego it and concentrate on getting well physically.

On the local radio station here, the doctor said the limitations to his work would be up to him, that the side effects vary for each person...and he is very eager to return as soon as possible.  So, we will see.

I did not get the chance to watch Denver yesterday, but I see where Manning had a great game.........completing 30 out of 38 for 338 yards and 3 TD's!

I know it was just Raiders, but NICE GAME!

On paper, tonights game between the Bears and the Cowboys may seem a bit dull.  I'm thinking this is a good chance for the Bears to see what they are really made of..........If Cutler does not produce, I'm thinking it may be time to look for a new QB.  Every time I try to like him he has a stinky game.  He CAN be as good as anyone on a given night....just cannot become consistent.
I'm predicting a bears victory.........24-17

The Troll

The day I waiting for is, the day Manning come back to Indianapolis and beats the crap out of Jim Irsay's Colts ass.  It is sure going to be sweet.
