He decided NOT to go throught the ROTC route.

From the research I have done, the Indiana National Guard uses taxpayer money to give National Guard members for their college education, did you use that.  Just asking.

"I" did not use ONE penny of it....My son, has/is serving in the Indiana National Guard and part of his compensation for doing so, is a monthly salary for serving at least ONE weekend a month, tuition and board IF he attends a college.......He served 16 weeks of U.S. Army Infantry training, and may be heading to Afghanistan perhaps as soon as this spring.

WTF is you point?  just askin?

I think he's asking if you feel like a member of your family is sucking on the government teat?

A military "member" on a deferment isn't really a military member at all, now are they?

I'm not sure how to answer you on this...........If a person takes an oath to defend his/her country and goes through the proper training to do so...yeah, they are military, through and through......100%

Uh, yeah, well if a person takes that oath, goes through training and then goes and fights in the conflicts in which we are currently engaged and then comes home and uses his benefits, that's one thing.  If, instead, that person chooses to use those benefits now while attempting to wait out the resolution of those conflicts, he's really just after the benefits without any of the responsibility; isn't he?  You tell me...does your boss pay you at the beginning of the pay period or the end of it?

FWIW, there was no GI bill when I served so I spent three years on active duty and didn't get shit toward tuition or room and board or anything else.

as with my son, he joined the Indiana National Guard under thier terms, and he is always on stand by to server in the event of a state-wide or perhaps a National emergency....His platoon has been close several times to go active in the middle east, but for various reasons has yet to happen.  He has wanted to go, but everytime he has gotten close, something always has happened to delay it.  Next month he is off to Atterbury for the entire month, and working with soldiers from other countries.  He has moved up in rank, and has been asked to serve in special assignments.  If he never get's deployed to anywhere, I think he has still served to his call of duty....with full honor.  Like I have said on here on another thread, he is hopefull to be deployed yet, to afghanistan.  It is his desire to do this, and I will not mind saying I hope he does not, but I respect him as a young man to make his own decision.

That was a form of assistance available, Veterans Education Assistance Program, but while not totally sponsored by the government it required only a small contribution by the person who wanted to take advantage of it.

Perhaps you should have read further...it allowed me the opportunity to save up to $100.00 a month from my pay up to a maximum of $2,700.00 which the government matched 2 to 1.  The most the government paid was $5,400.00 which together with my $2,700.00 resulted in a grand total of $8,100.00.  How far do you think that'll take someone in college?

Oh, bullshit and let's not forget that 1/3 of that money was mine and that I actually served full time for three years to get the other 2/3.
