I am sick and very disturbed about the report of the child in Disney World who was attacked and taken away by an alligator!!  The father tried to wrestle his child away, but was unsuccessful!...it has ruined my day.........I can only imagine the hell these parents are going through.....so sad and disturbing.

My heart goes out to them...

Mine, too, Henry.  It is a terrible thing, those poor parents and that poor baby. It makes me sick.

Witnesses said the area is clearly marked with "No Swimming" signs at every angle.  Makes me wonder what the child was doing in the water to begin with.

Also, who doesn't think the parents will try to milk the mouse, so to speak, for what appears to be their own negligence.

They found the child,of course, dead. Sad to think your vacation ends in a tragedy like this because one knows you just don't think about something like this happening when you take a family vacation.

I wondered if the signs were there because when I was there in 2010, the Disney area I was at had signs all around. It is tragic.

What do you mean, PL?  There were signs posted "No swimming".  I've been to DisneyWorld many times and saw those signs at every beach area I was at.  I know they have them at Wilderness Lodge, Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Coronado Springs, Caribbean Beach, Port Orleans, and Beach and Yacht Club as I have seen them myself.

I didn't know if they were in all parts of the beach or just the area we were is what I meant. I hadn't been to the other areas that you mentioned. I had only been to the Wilderness Lodge, so I didn't know if all areas of Disney had signs or not.

I really don't care at this time if there were signs or not.  Or if the parents made a mistake. It is a horrible tragedy and a father watched his baby be carried off to his death.

So many people are so quick to place blame and criticize.

My heart goes out to them....what a horrible incident.

Exactly, HH. It really doesn't matter as a family had planned a vacation and now planning a funeral. No one goes on vacation thinking that.

I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't a horrible tragedy.  I'm just saying that even if the parents are at fault, which it certainly looks like they were in light of the posted signage, that they'll still try and milk the mouse.

Wait and see.

All of the coverage I have seen said the father and son were wading in a foot of water, not exactly swimming. No, they shouldn't have been in the water but I have seen an alligator come out of the water and grab a dog. Disney has a policy of removing the alligators from the park and relocating them, at least according to friends who work there, so they do try to keep it safe.

Wading, swimming, whatever.

I take a "No Swimming" sign to translate to the following 5 words:

"STAY OUT OF THE WATER!"

Exactly!  Ironic that the supposed purveyors of "personal responsibility" and critics of "political correctness" are remiss to call out irresponsible parents.

There were no signs indicating alligators were in the water.  I have sat on one of those beaches, there were even chairs set out by the hotel for guests to use.  I know there are alligators all over Florida, but I don't remember being concerned sitting there. I bet it never occurred to that family to worry about alligators.  Doesn't mean they should have been in the water, just an observation.
