I graduated in 1969 and I can remember standardized tests all the way back to at least third grade. I remember Ms. Brooks showing me where I scored against the national average.

Ole' Bo D  do you remember Ms. Brooks first name?

Best regards,
Duke (had a teacher by the name of Brooks) Jupiter

No, Duke. Sorry. She taught 3rd grade at Abb's Valley Elementary in 1959 and was still there at least as late as 1962.

Ole' Duke had a Mrs. Ethel Brooks who taught him around 1970 or so, of course that was on the other side of the mountain from you.

We lived not all that far away, on the WV side.  Daddy had a job in the Ashland Mine and used to drive back and forth over Cherokee Mountain until he found a job at the Pocahontas mine.

Hey Lib,
Funny how me, you and Ole' Bo' D were separated by a hollow or 2 or as folks our way would say a "holler" or so. Me dad worked for US Steel for nearly 40 years and most of them at #9 Gary. Heck he worked at Jenkinjones mines for a year or so. Dad retired in 1991 and Ole' Duke is still blessed to have him at the age of 86. He still lives by himself, drives, mows,  weed eats and is independent as heck and of course me sister keeps a close check on him for which I am extremely grateful. The older Ole' Duke gets the more I appreciate me family and friends.
Best regards,
Duke (still goin' through the "maturation" process) Jupiter

You are blessed to have your father. I also have my father and he is also 86, but this past week was placed in a nursing home due to him falling and having a stroke! I am hoping with some rehab work that he will be back home with my stepmom!

 me too, Duke. Funny thing is, we're always young inside, but we have to grow old(er) to begin to figure that out.  You're very lucky to have your dad for so long. Mine died at age 48. My mother lived another 30 years, never remarried though she had offers.

Interesting how you, Bo and I lived just hollers away from each other, then moved far and wide, only to finally get acquainted on the old BDT posting board. When I signed on at the urging of a friend in Florida who grew up in Bramwell , the two of you were already there, carryin' on with all those others.  I miss those days. Took me a while to figure out that there were many more characters than real people postin' there.

Hope you are paying attention `Murica. That description surrounding being an employee of Amazon is exactly where the rest of corporate `Murica is headed. Soon the employees of Amazon's plight, which you may even find amusing right now, will be your reality at work. . . It is coming. . .

Again, it seems the world must constantly repeat its history in endless cycles of insanity. "Just because business owners in the 20's and 30's were so ruthless that they drove the need for unionization doesn't mean today's business leaders would do the same. They aren't like that anymore." Really? Let's ask the employees of Amazon if that is true. . .

My Dad worked at Gary #14!

Heck quite a few of me friends worked at 14 and even more of me friends' dad worked at 14. Me dad even worked at #17 for a short time which if me memory serves me correctly was below #14 a short distance towards Skygusty.
