That must be the exception to the rule because from all I've observed it's been as I described.
Experience and observation.

Observation of People Magazine and the National Enquirer ....

Books teach the subject but they can't tell how to use it for everyday applications in some situations. Sometimes one would rely on a book to maybe do paperwork or forms depending on the job but for the most part, one applied what they were taught outside the book learning!

Then what exactly is your experience? How far did you go in school?

I can't believe it's been 15 years since I was struggling to make a legacy SQL app Y2K compliant.

And, yes! ... I was able to do it because of my college education.

Remember the naysayers who crowed after no major problems popped up because of Y2K? I don't like to brag about anything, but it was because of all the guys like us that we had no major problems.

Guys with college educations ....

I think a lot of people who have more common sense are quite capable of not having to use the book sense.
What is unfortunate is the employers who don't realize that and will hire a book learned, no common sense or practical job knowledge person over a person with common sense and practical job knowledge.  I may have said that poorly but hope you know what I mean PL.

I understand! When I was a kid, I had to have braces. The orthodontist was just a good ole country boy, so to speak, he said that listen to what I tell you and you can have the braces off in 1 year, don't and it will be 2 years. He then asked if I had common sense or book smarts. I said I hope common sense, he said he bet I would get the braces off in  15 months, I got them off in 13 months because I did what he said! Nowadays, employers will hire an inexperienced person sometimes over someone with experience. It isn't always that way but  a lot of times!

Well whoopdedo for you.  Not everyone wants that type of job. I had that type of job twice and hated every minute of it
I'd rather glaze windows or work on a car engine than be stuck in a stuffy office all day dressed up and miserable.

I will agree with that to a certain extent but I have a nerd nephew who was helping his high school computer class teacher solve problems with their computers.  Even things like that can be self taught or learned with experience for some people but not many I would imagine.
