Sounds like he may be young enough he may not know exactly what he wants yet.  Afraid I'll have to agree with Troll on this one.

Define young? And When does that stop being an excuse?

You don't have to know exactly what you want to know that you want better. It's that knowledge that drives people to become educated. Whether that means an institution of higher learning or simply taking a calculated interest in the world around you.

Being stupid and going to college have nothing to do with each other.

There are varying degrees of "stupid" and stupidity is a quality that stands on it's own and can't be fixed. Not because the person isn't capable of more intelligent thought processes, but because they consciously CHOOSE to ignore learning more. The sad part is that they make this choice while thinking knowing anything further is unnecessary. So, they're not aware that they're stupid. Either that or they don't give a shit. I'm not a psychologist so take your pick.

Y's point is that adding stupidity, anger and lack of education is a perfect storm.

I'm sorry you are wrong on this one.  :treehug: I did get an apprenticeship, that was sponsored by Ford Motor Co., the UAW and the United States Government.  After the 4 year apprenticeship training, the education is worth 2 years of college credits at any state government funded college.

I have made more money with my skilled trade than about 80% of the college educated people in this country and probably the world.  That training also made it possible to become a state licensed plumbing contractor which was worth a lot more money.  I don't mind getting dirty and someone has to take care of the plumbing that you sit your pretty ass on.  :toilet:  I sure know you can't.  Some one has to do the actual work of building America than sitting on their ass :toilet: :blah: talking about it.

I had a desk job in the army, wore class A/s everyday and had my own desk.  Didn't like it and didn't make any money at it.  To each his own Tree Hugger  :treehug: :sa:

Your antipathy for higher learning prevents you from getting the point. Let it go, Troll.

He obviously didn't have an apathy for higher learning he just preferred to work with his hands and learn something he'd actually use rather than pay a ridiculous price to learn something he'd never use just to say he went to college.  Higher learning does not have to involve going to school/college especially if a person is not going to use it for a career.  For that you can go to the library, check out books on the subject, read them, and learn what it is you want to know.  Not everyone wants a cushy white collar job or a company management position a person needs college for and it's a good thing 'cause otherwise there would be no one to do the labor type jobs and those people with the "higher learning" would have to work on their own cars and open up their own clogged toilets.  Hum, guess that means they'd have to go to college to learn to do that too huh?  News flash, ya can't learn things like that in college it is trade school or OJT that gets you that knowledge.

This is gettin' truly scary that I'm not only agreeing with but sticking up for Troll.

it doesn't surprise me that you've missed the fact about Troll. Nor does it surprise me that you're also missing the point. I don't think that I can explain this any more clearly to help you both understand. Forget her plans. Even if her plans were different the young man is stupid, dangerous and he has NO desire to change that.

Antipathy and apathy are not the same thing.

This is a common misconception about higher learning and displays a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of post-secondary education.  At the undergraduate level, education is less about teaching about facts than it is about teaching a methodology for problem solving.  Students are taught how to collect information, analyze the results of that research and draw conclusions based on that analysis.  That skill is applicable to all aspects of life, whether it be running a company or, yes, even fixing a car or unclogging a toilet.

I've seen the methodology used by some who go to college and it didn't help them at all.  Most courses only teach black and white, not grey areas, so if it isn't in the book they have no clue.  They waste a lot of time looking for the obvious, what they were taught, not even considering to look also for what may not be so obvious therefore not solving the problem and wasting a lot of time.

And what research data do you base this on?

I have a college degree and I can say that I was taught to not go by the book. A book isn't going to give you the answers you need to figure it out in the real world!

That must be the exception to the rule because from all I've observed it's been as I described.

Idiot, the books were to teach the class but everyday application one used what they were taught and common sense. I would explain it more but you don't have enough damn sense to understand!

I think a lot of people who have more common sense are quite capable of not having to use the book sense.

Experience and observation.

In all of the college courses you've taken?  I can assure you that what you claim, while indicative of outdated, rote learning common in primary and secondary education decades ago, is not now nor has it ever been true above those levels.
