Only a fraction of the oil that normally courses through the Trans Alaska pipeline was flowing early Sunday after operators discovered a leak near Prudhoe Bay, a company spokeswoman said.

Crews making a routine inspection "found oil in the basement of a booster pump building" around 9 a.m. Saturday, according to Aleyeska Pipeline Service. Company spokeswoman Michelle Egan, who said flow has been reduced by 95%.

On a typical day, 642,261 barrels of oil would pass through the pipeline.

"Crews are currently onsite to assess the situation and isolate the source of the leak," a company statement said

They'll use this as an excuse to jack up the price of petro products toward 4 bucks a gallon. . . watch. . .

What do you want to bet it's lack of preventive maintenance so they could put more money in their pocket.  These pipe lines need constant maintenance.  They do leak and burn and spoil the land and water.

I will not take that bet, because it is a pretty safe assumption. . .

The oil companies sure have us by the bullocks.  Their electric price signs.  Friday, we went to Noblesville and on the way in we passed a Valero service station, the gas was $3.10.  An hour and a half going out, the price was $3.20.  What a racket.

For sure.  Prices should start falling any second as soon as our oil rigs get moved and they can get them fired up off the coast of Brazil.  Glad we aren't using them anymore and they're being used by a country that keeps a more watchful eye on their safe operations and who are equipped to handle the spills and accidents better.   I'll rest much easier at night now.

You poor dumb asses.  The oil companies are beyond the Republicans and the Democrats.  It could be fixed but the oil companies pour so much money into both parties, nothing gets fixed.

Tell me ole brilliant one, Hawk.  How does the Democrats raise the price of oil.  We all know the Bush family has had it's fingers in the oil business for over a hundred years.  Where in hell did the Bush family make all of the money.  It's from oil and fucking the American people.

Let's see. . .

  • They wanted more offshore drilling, the republican party ran on that platform, and the POTUS extended and olive branch and let them have their way, and we got the deep water horizon.
  • They want to expand on shore drilling into the "last frontier", but the infrastructure they have in place is as leaky as thattch hut's roof in a monsoon. They don't even perform basic maintenance on it now and it is leaking all over the ground.
[li]So the POTUS holds the department(s) responsible for the oversight of these companies, as should have been done years ago, and they are now threatening to take their toys and go elsewhere? (Where's the problem in that?)
[/li][/list]

The only reason they are (if they are) moving their rigs is because they'll have to comply with US regulations in order to assure no further or future environmental disasters. That costs money and they don't want to spend it on something that will in their eyes provide zero return on the investment. (It doesn't matter that they are making billions already, each business quarter).

They think that moving to foreign lands will remove this requirement, and so it may; but when they have the very same things happen for the very same reasons, those same countries will do more than regulate them. . . at least some of them will.

Now, as to the price of petro products, the present increases have more to do with US investment entities than the oil companies from what I can see. When the stock markets went south they invested in oil holding facilities and began buying up the supplies, which they hold in order to drive the prices higher due to restriction of the supplies, then sell once their targeted levels are reached. . .
