A 4.2 EQ struck this morning in Howard county and I felt it here in Anderson!  :spooked:

Happened shortly before 8 this morning and the news is now reporting on it. . .  :spooked:

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 4.2 magnitude earthquake centered about 13 miles southeast of Kokomo at 7:55 a.m. today.

Reports to the Star felt the quake as far south as Martinsville and as far west as New Castle. People on the Northeastside of Indianapolis and in Noblesville said items were shaking on shelves.

Gabrielle Sauce, who co-owns an advertising/marketing company agency in Noblesville, said she was working while sitting on her couch when "the house began to rattle and shake. It lasted probably 5 to 7 seconds."

USGS is now saying that the EQ was a 3.8 and not a 4.2 as they initially reported it.

The epicenter is "highly irregular, extremely rare, unprecedented," John Steinmetz, director of the Indiana Geological Survey at Indiana University, told the Star Press at Muncie. (Concerning today's quake)

The Indiana Geological Survey had no records of an earthquake this size in Central Indiana ever. Steinmetz said he needed more time to research when — if ever — central Indiana had been the center of even a more minor earthquake.

The last major earthquake in Indiana on April 18, 2008, had a magnitude of 5.2 and was the strongest to hit the state in 40 years.

September 1998: A 5.2-magnitude shakes buildings in at least five states, including parts of Northern Indiana.

June 2002: A 5.0-magnitude earthquake strikes near Evansville and is felt as far north as South Bend. Only minor damage is reported.

April 2008: A 5.2 quake, the biggest in 40 years, had its start at West Salem, Ill., about 125 miles southwest of Indianapolis. It rattled windows and woke people from their beds just after 5:30 a.m.
