Did they save the car?

Yeah I know, we car guys look at things a little different.  Glad your friend was OK.  How in the hell did the fire get into the passenger compartment?

Blew a fuel line and the top end off and through the glass. . . :spooked: Thing was spewing fire!

Yeah, it was saved. Here's a pic of it the following spring after he finished rebuilding it:

And a picture of it 3 years ago at the same strip:

And here's a build I helped him out with early in his hobby:

And another:

He still owns this one and drives it routinely on the street.

Had a friend lose a Camaro to a fuel fire on the windshield many years ago.  They didn't save that one, but he too walked away.  Glad to see he was able to save the Nova.  I like those Galaxys too, had one in high school myself.

He found both of those in an elderly man's garage after he had passed. He bought them both for next to nothing and built them one at a time. . . I had a blast helping him and there are a TON of good times and memories connected with both of those vehicles for me personally. I think they were both 1964's, and the guy was a retired Ford employee who had bought them through the company employee program. . .

Got a comment and or a question.  When I was working some of the guys in the rehab crib who were in to building this type of car.  As you know all of the new cars have electric gas pumps on them and they also have a safety shut off valve if you hit something.

One day at dinner they were talking how they could fix their car with hand and automatic shut off switch for their electrical gas pump.  Which you know as long as the pump has power from the battery, it will keep in pumping gass.   So in case of an accident or a blown motor they could shut off the gas.  I don't what they did, but they came up with something.

My question, did this car have a shut off switch.  I appears that it didn't.

Yes it did have a fuel shut off, and the fire and resulting explosion still happened.

The switch worked but what you see burning is what was in the system before the shut off kicked in. (The pump shuts off but it cannot evacuate the fuel lines and intake, so that has to burn off or be put out.)  The system met NHRA standards before the event and yet it still happened. . . It was inspected prior to his entry in the event and pre-event, and passed.

Because the fuel line burst and the top end came apart, those flames are from fuel that should have been contained within the system but no longer were.

As you can see from the picture though, he was at the start/stage line when it happened, so fire/safety crews were Johnny on the spot to put it out quickly. New top, new glass, new hood, new seat and harness, new engine, new paint, and I don't know what else, and he was back in action. $$$$ But he does most of his own work so that saved him some. . .

A drag car will only have a manual fuel shut off switch.  Driver has to hit it to stop the flow.  The automatic/hit a bump stuff is for modern OEM systems.  But even one of those would have taken a tiny bit to respond when the computer sees a drop in pressure and shuts down the pump.

A little bit of fuel goes a long way in a situation like this, and windshields ain't worth a damn when it comes to holding back fire.
