Last night the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Reorganization Committee was supposed to decide whether to recommend keeping the police department or the sheriff's department. They said keep both ... but let the Sheriff (instead of the mayor) appoint the Police Chief.

Well, the E'ville cops are outraged! The very idea they might be accountable to someone other than the Lord Mayor offends them.

But the plan didn't please police officers who lined the walls of the reorganization committee's meeting room and spilled out into the hallway.

Some of them hurled critical and incredulous remarks at committee members who sometimes appeared to be confused about the elements of Whobrey's motion and the parliamentary niceties of voting.

They also had posted about 100 nasty comments on the story, but the Courier removed them for being offensive and libelous (or slanderous... I'm not certain blogs count as publication.)

I can't help but feel this vote results from the plethora of stories this year about E'ville cops who have been arrogant, abusive, and convicted! About damn time someone held them accountable. The sheriff and his deputies aren't perfect, but they aren't appointed and protected by Lord John. Every one of them I have ever dealt with is actually POLITE.

Now we all have to walk very carefully while the cops pout.

Wasn't a ex E'ville policeman recently convicted and sentenced to 12 years for sexually assaulting motorists?

At least your Sheriff isn't in the pocket of local organized crime like the Sheriff here in Martin County. The Sheriff here is a puppet of the Cornfield Mafia, whose leader remains anonymous and his identity is clouded in mystery. This evil man is fondly called the "Toad" by members of the crime family and is rumored to be a cold blooded psychopath who indiscriminately kills creatures of the forest merely for pleasure. One day I will learn this man's identity and pay him a cordial visit with Cousin Brutus.
What the Hell is a signature? Am I supposed to type something in this box? I guess I'll find out.
