What??????  You have got to be kidding.  There'd better be a damn good reason for this.

(CNN) -- The U.S. government has dropped charges against Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the suspect in the bombing of the destroyer USS Cole, according to a Pentagon spokesman.

The charges were dropped "without prejudice" by Susan Crawford, convening authority at the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, according to Pentagon spokesman Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon. The proceeding did not address specifics of the government's case against al-Nashiri, who remains a "high value" detainee held at Guantanamo.

In removing the charges without prejudice, prosecutors can resubmit charges at a later date while at the same time complying with President Barack Obama's order to the military to hold off on cases for four months.

On his first day in office, Obama ordered the halt, requiring prosecutors to seek delays in the 14 active cases before military commissions there. But the judge, Col. James Pohl, ordered arraignment for Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri to go ahead as scheduled on Monday.

With this move, all cases at Guantanamo are now in line with the president's order to halt court proceedings at the detention center, according to Gordon.

Al-Nashiri is accused of planning the October 2000 bombing of the Cole while it was in the Yemeni port of Aden. The attack killed 17 American sailors and crippled the vessel, which returned to service in 2002.

The Office of Military Commissions, which manages the prosecutions of suspected terrorists, said last week that it might have to temporarily drop charges against al-Nashiri to comply with the presidential order.

When prosecutors asked for a continuance in the trial, Pohl denied the request, saying the government's "argument for continuances were unpersuasive," according to a copy of his opinion. Pohl noted there had been no previous requests for a delay, and that the public's interest in a speedy trial would be harmed by further delay.

Al-Nashiri was captured in 2002. He was held in secret locations until being transferred to Guantanamo Bay in 2006.

Meanwhile, the White House has invited families of sailors who died in the Cole bombing to meet with Obama on Friday.

A number of the families were called Thursday afternoon, according to Andrew Hall, the lawyer who represented families.

The invitation was for the families to attend "without their lawyers," according to Hall. They were not told why they were going to meet with Obama, he added.

According to the White House schedule for Friday, Obama will meet privately with families of the Cole attack and also with families of victims of the 9/11 attacks.

"The president wants to talk with these families about resolving the issues involved with closing Guantanamo Bay -- while keeping the safety and security of the American people as his top priority," the schedule said.

Well, I have always thought that they were holding a lot of people with no proveable evidence.

If the glove doesn't fit you can't convict.  It is ridicules to hold a person for 8 years without a trial.  Here in American we are suppose to receive a due and timely trial.

Now Cheney needs to be put on trial for what he did to these people.

Yeah, he raised a little money.  But he should have raised more.  The Millionaire Bastard only makes $38 Million a year.  What a Hero.  He could give $8 million and take off his taxes and still have $30 million left.  Hell, Henry you and I could live on that, don't you think?

Then all he has to do is SUCKER SOME OLD  PEOPLE in to buying GOLD marked up 400% and he would get the $8 million back fast.  Heeeeeeee  goooooood peopleeeeeeeeee.  Somebody say Amen for good old Glen.  Let us  and   :kickcan: Put something $ in the pot boy.

You have a really bad habit of projecting your opinions onto everyone else and claiming that the 'vast majority' blah, blah, blah.  Speak for yourself and stop trying to make it seem like everyone agrees with you because we don't.  This forum can be seen as a microcosm of society in general; how many people here agree with your warped, uninformed viewpoints and how many don't?

bullshit, this forum is a liberal forum....and does NOT represent real life by any means....MOST of my conservative friends don't waste time on such miniscule events as this, I'm not sure why I waste my time here to be honest with you........and suck it, I will state my opinions BASED upon what I know as facts....this next election will merely support what i am claiming as facts...and that will be the vast majority. ;)

The reason for it can be found in the very article you pasted had you bothered to even read it.

And from the looks of his reply, HH didn't bother to read it either.

Why not?  This doesn't in any way mean he's getting off.  Do you even understand that fact?

Being able to read might be a prerequisite in this case.

I understand what they meant but I also understand that the delay means he could also be released because of the right to a speedy trial if they aren't allowed to refile soon.

PUHLEEEZE!!  That's merely stupid supposition on your part.  Speedy trial?  They've had him in custody since November of 2002.  If they were affording this guy any Constitutional rights, he would have been tried a long time ago.

BTW, just to quash some of your outrage, if they ever did decide to release this guy without charging him, he would most likely be turned over to Yemeni authorities.  He's under a death sentence in Yemen for the Cole bombing.  But I guess you didn't know that.
