NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Porsche announced Wednesday that it will produce its 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid sports car, which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in April. The car boasts a 500-horsepower V8 engine and is expected to be among the most expensive Porsches ever produced.

The German sports carmaker said it green lighted the car after receiving "overwhelming response from the public and customers" on its concept study. Back in April, Porsche's development chief, Wolfgang Duerheimer, said Porsche needed at least 1,000 sales pledges to start building the car.

This 918 Spyder uses electric motors in the front and rear axles to supplement the gasoline engine power. It plugs in for its electric power, which is stored in a liquid-cooled lithium ion battery housed just behind the seats.

Porsche has not yet set the price for the car. . .

This just struck me as weird. . . A Porsche Hybrid?????? :spooked:

  I wonder what it cost to replace the water cooled batteries.  Then if you have to ask the price for batteries you can't afford a Porsche.

Depends on the handling, speed, etc.

I'm thinking that there are electric cars that travel faster than a bad attitude.
Ignorance and fanaticism are ravenous. They require constant feeding.

  But not faster than a cop and a copter.  But for some reason electric cars turn me on like doing a burn out with the front tires smoking.  That just not sexy.  Smoking front tires?

  They sure can.  I remember when I was a kid, I would get toys that required batteries and I didn't have the money for batteries and dad wouldn't buy them, saying they were to expensive.

  I think I would be in the same shape today of buying batteries for a Teslamotors roadster.
