Obama will use Memorial weekend for a trip home to Chicago

With the long Memorial Day weekend on the horizon, President Obama is finally addressing one of the great broken promises of his administration: his early pledge to return home to Chicago every six weeks or so.

In 16 months at the White House, the Obamas have been back home just once - in February of 2009. But they plan to make the trip over Memorial Day weekend, an official said. After arriving on Thursday night, they will visit with friends and participate in private events.

On Monday, Obama will make remarks at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, south of Chicago - missing the usual tradition of presidents speaking at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day.

Vice President Biden and his wife will appear in Obama's place, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as holding a breakfast for Gold Star families -- families whose loved ones died in military service -- at the White House earlier that day.

Well and not only is he running the country, but he is also a parent of school aged children.  Only so many 3 day weekends available to take your kids on a trip.

I don't feel TOO sorry for him, he has managed to squeeze in 32 rounds of golf, but only ONE (1) news conference since last summer.....

I don't recall anyone castigating the Shrub when he chose to stay in Texas on Memorial Day during his presidency. . .

A visit to Arlington is not mandatory, although I myself would be very disappointed in him if he chose to ignore this national period of remembrance of those who have served; but he isn't. He is instead visiting another National Cemetery in his home state in order to recognize those that have served, and it is just as much an honor!

How fair is it for the head of state to always mark this occasion by visiting the very same site when the nation is full of identical sites that are the final resting places of our honorable ancestors? Or are those interred at Arlington the only ones deserving of such an honor?

Just to make it clear, I don't have any problem with Obama going to Chicago for Memorial Day weekend....

PH, believe me, Bush made ALL sorts of news similar to this....for just as lame reasons.....

I really don't have any problem with Obama playing golf....I just think it needed to be reminded...

All the POTUS' have their escapes, and ways to deal with the pressure...

though I am not an Obama fan...........I know he is under an enormous amount of pressure....these are some pretty rough times.
