The top 1% already pay approx. 40% of all the federal income taxes....

Actually, it was 36.7% in 2009, the last year for which all the numbers are in.  These same people own more than 60% of all of the financial wealth in the country (and growing); why is the amount they're paying unreasonable if they are benefiting so handsomely?

In 2002, before the Bush Tax cuts the top 1% only paid 33.7% of the total federal income taxes collected.

but to answer your question.  I don't think it is being unreasonable to keep them where they currently are.  I'm not even totally against raising thier taxes it on those making over a milliono.....but NOT on those making over $250,000.

I think it is totally unreasonable to keep them where they are, because putting them where they are is a large component surrounding why WE are where we are today!

Again, Palehorse I would not disagree with you that perhaps raising taxes on the millionaires, but the democrats keep wanting to start with the tax increases on those over $250,000 and I, 100% disagree with that.  THOSE are the small businessmen and they do NOT need MORE taxes during this rough economic times.  Why have they not introduced only taxing the millionaires?  THAT has not happened.  But, even at that, it is NOT going to make a hill of beans different.  They also need to make sure, in my opinon, that all money that is gathered from these taxes is applied to paying of our deficit and NOT just thrown into the mix of MORE spending.

You can't quantify your belief that those making over $250,000.00 (lots of executives at lots of corporations fall into this category) are small business owners and those making over $1 million are not.  Your cutoff number is completely arbitrary.
