NFL shamed into major fines for helmet-to-helmet hits.

Finally caught up w/Harrison.
Ignorance and fanaticism are ravenous. They require constant feeding.

I don't think fines are going to do it.  They're going to have to start hitting them with suspensions for several games to put a serious dent in the problem.   If a coach knows he's going to lose a player for a few games because of that crap, only then will they take notice and do something about it.

Agreed! These guys are multi millionaires and I am sure most of them budget a certain amount out of each years revenues for work related fines; writing them off as necessary costs associated with being a marquee player and maintaining that status. They know that big hits get big playtime on the highlight reels, and their perceived popularity rises with each entry.

Suspend them for multiple games for each infraction, and when they stop seeing those game checks they'll stop the crap!

I agree too, I'm mean if you are going to penalize them, hit them where it hurts....a suspension will get everyone's attention....
I think the NFL is getting like NASCAR...they are making equipment too safe...to the point where there is no longer any fear factor....NASCAR, those guys have no problem wrecking at 200 mph any longer, so they are way more aggressive and less driving ability is required....with the NFL, these defensive players are like kamikaze's out there...it seemed like it was safer back when they had leather helmets...they respected each other better...

What I don't understand is the Harrison hit was not a penalty on the field but the NFL took it upon themselves to fine him anyway.  He also was fined higher than the rest because they consider him a chronic abuser of the rule.

This is football people!  You signed up for this.
Take time to smell the roses.

Because the referees were negligent does not make the hit legal (according to rules, not the law).

Accidental hits are understandable. Deliberate attempts to injure (despite the denials by Harrison) are not within the rules.

I played the game through college. Even when we played our fiercest rivals, no one that I knew at the time tried to destroy any opponent and hurt them badly enough to take them out of the game.

If Harrison's situation were reversed and he was the person being blind-sided or hit from behind, I have a sneaking suspicion that he would be singing a different tune.

Of course, Steeler fans will certainly disagree.

But, then, look at their quarterback.

Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee has been arrested on suspicion of public intoxication this morning after he reportedly took a predawn swim in the Central Canal in Broad Ripple.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were called to the canal at Broad Ripple and College shortly before 5 a.m. after a report of a man swimming in the canal of the popular nightlife district.

A 911 call was received about 4:45 a.m. this morning from a woman who said a wet, shirtless man tried to get into her car at a traffic signal at Broad Ripple Avenue, according to WTHR (Channel 13). The woman said he had "blond, shaggy hair wearing jeans," and that he "looks like he's freezing."

"I think he's out of it," the caller told the dispatcher.

Police later found McAfee, 23, in the area, shirtless and soaking wet, and arrested the second-year Colts player at the corner of Broad Ripple and College avenues, IMPD spokesman Lt. Jeff Duhamell said.

Police say McAfee smelled of alcohol, his eyes were watery and bloodshot and his speech slurred. When police asked McAfee if he had been swimming in the canal, he replied, "I'm not sure," according to an IMPD report. He later said, "it was raining," and said his shirt was "in the water," according to the report.

When asked how much he had to drink McAfee replied, "A lot because I am drunk."

McAfee asked if he could hail a cab or walk home but the officer told him there were no cabs that late and that it wasn't safe for him to walk.

"I know I am drunk but does that mean I cannot walk home?" McAfee asked, according to the report. Police also said the kicker had a hard time standing up.

Police say McAfee took a portable breathalyzer test and recorded a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 — nearly twice the level to be considered legally intoxicated if driving.

Duhamell said McAfee might have been in the canal, which runs alongside Westfield Boulevard but no witnesses saw him in the water.
