"Pork, to the critic, is service to the people who enjoy some of the good things in life, and I've been happy to bring to West Virginia the projects to which they refer. I have no apology for it," he said.

"When I am dead and am opened they will find West Virginia written on my heart."

Well, I am not a big Lugar fan, but Byrd was the first legislator to bring $1 billion of "pork" spending to his home state...and I think THAT is not something that anyone should be proud of.....Also, he also voted against the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act..he even fillibusterd for 14 hours to try to stop it...he was a member of the KKK...he is nothing more than a racist, who kept in office because he bribed his votes with millions and millions of dollars worth of pork...

You have a lot of nerve.

Couldn't you have SOME respect for the dead by reserving your twisted half-truths for the living. There are plenty of living Democrats for you to despise.

He was no longer a member of the Klan, he learned from his mistakes. People are capable of change. He admited to his mistakes and felt remorse for his decisions and proved it by becoming one of Washington's biggest champions for civil rights.

At a minimum, I find it hypocritical for you to judge anyone's stance on race considering the party you bow down to.

I'm with you on this, Sandy. If he did nothing else, Sen. Byrd proved that even a politician can learn and evolve.

Best quote: ...his politics resonated with the African-American community and came out on the right side of issues that are of concern to black voters. Byrd enjoyed a perfect 100 percent rating from the NAACP.

Yeh, he was pretty much was an old sonavabitch, but he sure was loyal to his state.  If Luger, Bayh, Burton, Pense and Coats had been as loyal, we might have some nice things here in Indiana.

and that is an expressed opinion of mine, that I claimed.....and I base it upon comments he made a few years ago where he called a group of folks...."white niggers".........I take that as a very racist remark.
