The Spa had the best steaks in town and they made a killer Bacardi cocktail. Loved the garlic toast, too.

Those wonderful Spanish Hamburgers from the lunch counter of McCrory's dime store on the corner of 10th & Meridian, where the city busses used to pick up and drop off passengers. What a great aroma-- the food, NOT the busses! Pa

I have only had this here in the south, but it is a favorite.  Grilled pimento cheese on white bread.  Pimento cheese spread is delicious.  All it is is grated shape cheddar, diced pimentos, mayo, and garlic salt.  Put that in your feed processor to blend and voila!!  I even saw a guy on TV put a little bit of bread and butter pickle juice in it for flavor.  What makes the sandwich so good is that it is already creamy so when you are grilling it, it is super gooey!!  Enjoy!

That corner reeked of old diesel smoke from those cream and green busses. I don't know how anyone could eat anything around there.

Who peed in the pickle jar? Inquiring minds want to know.

The pickle jar wasn't all. Mayonnaise.

I had a close friend who worked there. None of us neighborhood kids would touch the place.

Bats,

It was the best fried chicken I've ever had!

At the Old Trail once, my parents took a HUGE snapping turtle that crawled up into our driveway from a pond out back, and had the turtle made into soup and fried turtle. They made us kids eat a bite of it, and I have to say it was delish, however, we were mad at them for killing the poor turtle, so we only took the one bite, no more. That turtle laid eggs by our garage, and in the spring, there were baby turtles all over the place. My parents would eat anything that moved.

Gardengirl: Fried turtle is definitely one of the greatest taste delights on this planet!
They are an absolute bear to clean and prepare, tho; that's why it's so rare and so few people have eaten it. I've helped clean a few, spurred on only by the thought of
the wonderful treat to come. They used to serve it at one of the incarnations of that
little tavern on Columbus Ave., right across the street from Delco-Remy plant 1; right
next door to Bert T. Owens' Ice Cream -- now there's a whole 'nother thread: your
favorite flavor from Bert T's!

I have always preferred "sandwich spread" to "ham salad".  Anyone else feel that way? And my favorite way to have it is grilled like a grilled-cheese sandwich (my favorite grilled-cheese is with col-jack). Hey, kimmi, why don't you and I start a business selling grilled-whatever sandwiches? We will have to come up with a catchy name for them, though. Just calling them "Grilled-<insert filling here>" would probably only net us $2.00 per sandwich.

Let me think......hey! Here's a word that I made up, but it sounds much more delicious and expensive: "Panini". What do you think?

I say yes to that idea!!!

Let me know when your little bistro opens, I'll be one of your first customers for a "Ghost of Kimmi"
sammitch! ;D

kimmi

I like the way that sounds!!

I got creative today and had a grilled turkey, swiss, tomato, and avocado sandwich today!!  It was delish!

My mom's fav at Bert T. Owens was the orange/pineapple shake, and we all loved the black walnut shakes. You can get nothing like that here in California.

My fav sandwich is on squaw bread-turkey, cheese, bacon, tomato, mayo and avocado! Delish!

My favorite at Bert T's was the cinnamon. Shocking pink in color, and incredibly delicious. Kinda like eating a cinnamon ball while drinking a cold glass of milk. Best I ever ate!
