Hey! Cool! Thanks!
I was just about to go look on MySpace.

CHAR LU  ANY BODY REMEMBER SEEING CHUBBY CHECKER THERE. I WAS HIS CHAUFFEUR. I PICKED HIM UP AND DROPPED HIM OFF AT HOLIDAY INN. HE WAS VERY OPEN AND NICE GUY.

Remember when it was Wendy's? Played there then and also when it was the Char-Lu. The band I was in made her the money to build that addition.

I always really liked Robin. I'm not sure who the bass player or drummer were, but that's Mike Eustler (sp?) on lead guitar in the video.
Gee, I haven't heard Robin or even OF Robin for a couple of years now. I hope she is doing well. Ditto Mike E.

Lessee...Tom Evans. He either ripped-off and/or pissed-off most of the musicians in the Anderson/Madison county area over the years.
A couple of years ago I was approached by some mutual friends to play some kind of concert at the city auditorium with/for Tom.
I declined. Too much bad blood, even if he has "got religion" now.

Robin moved to Alaska and was supposed to be in town over christmas again this year but just like last year she never showed. Last time I saw Mike he was the same as ever and you know what that means. I haven't heard anything about Tom for years now.

Elliot's, I think.

Let's see...I came on the music scene in Anderson in the early 80's. Da Wham is MUCH older than I, lol!
I remember playing at the VIP lounge on 53rd street before it became a strip club.
And the "Thunderdome", er, I mean the "Char-Lu" near downtown. I played there many, many times. At least one weekend a month for a year, I think it was. For awhile it was THE music club in Anderson.

Does anyone remember the short-lived jazz and BBQ club that was downtown? I played there once or twice with Rudy Turner.

Yeah played at the VIP long before it became a strip club, back when Nancy IIRC was managing the place for the guy that owned Anderson Wrecker IIRC. Played at the Char-Lu before it was the Char-Lu. It was Wendy's back then. That BBQ, wasn't it in the old Downtown Scrounge.....er....Lounge bar? Rudy's also and old friend of mine.

When I think of the Char-Lu in the 80's....I think of the Daugherty Brothers Band or Nuthin Fancy....

Know both of those band and the members. Still see Dan, Steve, and Rick. We all played at the Rebound Lounge out on Moss Island road and Cross.

Oh yeah, Rudy!
I met Rudy Turner at Music Today (it might still have been Joe's, even). I was just a guy who wandered in to check out bass guitars that he couldn't afford. Rudy was sitting on an amp jamming on a guitar like nobody's business, lol! I was astounded at what he could do. It was so different from the R'n'R I was used to hearing.
We talked for a minute, and introduced ourselves. He then had me get a bass down off of the wall, plug in, and jam with him.
Of course I SUCKED, lol!
But he was patient and showed me what he wanted me to play, and he jammed over top of my bass lines.
That started a musical friendship that lasted until he moved out of town. For the next year I would go to his house once or twice a week and he would teach me to not just play music, but to FEEL music. He taught me how to "create a conversation" with my instrument. He got me away from using picks and just using my fingers to play the bass (much more expressive), and how volume is another tool of musical expression.
Btw, Rudy could not read music! He was by far the best "ear player" that I ever heard, though.
I even played a few gigs with him, and made a recording (I still have a copy on cassette).
I owe a lot to Rudy Turner and I miss him greatly.

Haven't seen Rudy in years. Me and Rudy used to hang out at the pawn shop and jam. Back before it moved to 10th street. It was on the corner of Meridian and 14th. It moved there after the owner had been shot and killed in 66 or 67 at the old location further up that block. I used to hang out at that original location way back when I was in high school. Got my first guitar from the original location and my second one after they moved down the block.

You know a student of Rudy's named Frank Steans?
