If you want a good reflection of that day....take five minutes and listen to this song.. :)

I was at work....watching it on TV in or conference room...with about 50 employees....a day, I hope we never have to go though again.

I was on my way to work when the first plane hit. I was on the DC beltway at Pennsylvania Avenue. At first the radio was reporting it as a commuter plane. I was almost at work when the second plane hit and when I ran into the building, almost everybody was crowded into the conference room watching the TV.

As we watched we heard shouting from down the hallway. One of our technicians called and was screaming about a plane hitting the Pentagon. He was in the parking lot there. (We do a lot of work at the Pentagon and the Government provides us with an office there.)

The plane hit the section of the building where our office was. It took us what seemed like forever to locate all of our four employees assigned to that office, but they were safe in other parts of the Pentagon.

Then I began to worry about my wife. She worked in DC only two blocks from the White House. I started trying to call her but by that time the telephone system was overwhelmed. Strangely enough, I was able to get an e-mail through to her. I begged her to get out of the city as soon as possible. Many of the direct routes were jammed according to radio reports as the only way out was to head north, the opposite direction from our home. I pleaded with her to go anyway, just get out.

When I was assured that she was on the road (every now and then we could get the cell phones to work) I went to work helping to track down and account for our field technicians. When all were finally accounted for, I went to my office, shut the door, and prayed.

Sometime around 4:00, I decided to try and make it home. When I went outside, the first thing that struck me was an odd silence. There were no planes anywhere.

you know as i reflect more on this day....though it was one of the worst days in our history as US citizens....it was also, a time whre the people of this country came together as a nation...it was a time, where politics did not exist....and we acted like, what I believe, God wants us to act...we put others in front of our own needs....without any reserve....

and now, we are a at a all time low in hatred and selfishness....

Why is that?

just my opinion, but this election is bringing out the worst in all of us....we are a divided nation...dem vs. repub....atheist vs. Christian....to name a few...is was getting that way BEFORE 9/11....then we had a small window of what we SHOULD be like...but, as time goes on....people forget...and hatred succumbs..

Not just this election. It started far before this.

IMHO, a large part of the blame can be placed on the media, particularly talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh (and others) who make a living making fun of people they don't agree with.

leave it to you and I to take opposite views... ;D

though i agree with ya on the the media...via nightly news....waging lies...such as claiming tht our economy is going to be ina recession....for the last 7 years...that is all they kept saying..the surge will never work...they have shoved liberalism down our thoats.....EVERYTHING negative about this country....Katie Couric has made me ill watching her...

people like Rush, actually gives me hope...he throws back at the mainstream media....he has been a voice for middle america....(not going to argue...this is the way I see it)

He's a hate monger and you know it.

Just visit his website and look at the jeering, the name-calling, the made-up pictures, the outright lies and deception in his "headlines."

I lived in Maryland at the time and was working in a location somewhere between PA and DC. When the 1st plane hit...I thought, "What an idiot. I can't believe someone was that stupid". I was thinking that it was a small plane and perhaps an inexperienced pilot. When the second plane hit..I stood up...as did all my coworkers...completely stunned. You could have heard a pin drop. When we all started to come around...it seemed like everyone was talking at once. Like Bo D, we had liaisons at the Pentagon, but also, working on the east coast w/military installations and testing sights all throughout the I95 corridor, we were concerned about who would be hit next. Of course when we started tossing that thought around, my thoughts went directly to my children. I was frantic and wanted to go to them right then. It wasn't a problem for my boss, but security had locked us down and wasn't allowing anyone to leave or enter our building. Finally, my supervisor was able to convince someone to let me and some others go. Little good it did, traffic was at a dead stop. No one was moving anywhere quickly. After a few hours of what was normally a 20 minute drive, I heard news on the radio of the emergency plan for the various schools. I went to that location and picked the kids up and went home.

After a while, I turned the TV and radios off. I was afraid that it had gone beyond news and I was concerned about my children watching the coverage non-stop, but once bedtime hit, I turned it back on. I don't remember sleeping at all.

The next day, I decided to take the children to the park. Something perfectly normal. I remember being angry because they took away our sense of well being and I wanted to feel like normal was still out there. We all put on our flag shirts and headed to the park. I remember a woman scolded me for making my children "sitting ducks" by having them wear their flag shirts. I can't remember what I said to her. I think I was angry with her, but then later felt guilty because I thought maybe she had a point.

Like most of the USA, I was at work when a retired friend called me with the news.  I went to the breakroom and saw the second plane hit on live TV.  Watching that building crumble, just about made me throw up.  My oldest son was at home, waiting to go off to the Air Force, he had just enlisted.  He called the recruiter to see if he needed to show up then, or wait until his scheduled time at the first of the next month.  The recruiter told him to wait, as things were under control.  To say he was frustrated in not getting to go early was an understatement.  Our other son was in school that day, and my wife was at work.  I called her so they could turn on the TV, they had not heard the news yet.

Later in the day, large helicopters started flying over the plant on the way to the Newport Chemical weapons depot just north of us.  Troops were being deployed for security to safeguard the VX.

I was proud to see the citizens come together in support of the USA.  It was also the day that cemented my being an atheist, as too many inocent people lost their lives in the name of religion.

I was at home packing to catch the "red eye' out of the tristate airport for Portland Maine of all places. Well I was not on the first flight out ..not the next day but the day after. It was  not scary on the flight out, but watching the news and seeing the man in the blue shirt walking where I walked made me not want to fly home.
