I watched friends the first season or two, then I started to not like sitcoms, with the exception of Seinfeld and The Simpsons.
"Breaks" are a girl thing.
It means they're going to go looking around to see if they can find something better than you out there.
If they do, sayonara.
If they don't, they'll be back.
If they find someone else about the same, they'll come back and use him as leverage to get you to be better than you are.

I agree breaks are pretty much a lame excuse for "I don't know what I want." If he doesn't know he wants me then he is going to be replaced with he whom I know wants me.
