This summers project is going to be my master bathroom. Now that Ive got the knack of laying tile, I need to upgrade that space. Currently, there is a smallish (3'6 x 3'-6") glass shower and a large soaking tub (no jets). If I were staying in this house forever, Id get rid of the tub altogether and just have a large shower with a couple of heads in it. But, I doubt I stay in this place more than another two years. So, I have to consider resale. The cost to replace the existing tub with a nice whirlpool is comparable to what it would cost to just do the big shower. I dont have the space to do both, so its one or the other. (or, just leave what I have and save a couple grand)
If it were your house, which would you prefer?
My dream bathroom has a huge garden tub w/whirlpool jets which is separate from the double (two shower heads) corner shower.
I've seen them at home stores, but can't find a picture of the exact thing, but I'm sure you know what I mean.
A lot of the homes in our community had that option, but we just went for the whirlpool tub w/shower inside. To have a separate shower would mean cutting into my walk-in.
I voted for shower and whirlpool.
My dream bathroom has a large 2 person sized standup shower with travertine walls and a glass door. There would also be several shower heads. AHHHHH I stayed in a hotel in Chicago that had this. It was fun!
Hopefully you had someone with ya'.
The shower in my parents house when they first moved in had six shower heads. I never did quite understand it..there was one on each short side (one where it goes, one opposite wall) and four on the other wall across from the doors, in random places. I don't quite get it. The water pressure sucked, too. The previous owner did some sucky version of DIY.
I voted for shower and whirlpool tub. That's what we're getting put into our new home in the master suite. 8)
And it still has two HUGE walkin closets!

Of course! And I only vote for that model if it comes with someone! ;D

I voted for shower and soaking tub.......Deep tub to relax and soak in.....I loved my claw foot tub at the old house....Huge shower with steam and lots of shower heads.
I haven't taken a "bath" in probably 8 years...but, I miss the hot tub on a daily basis...
So, my ideal of a master bath suite would be a glass-enclosed shower with travetine tile walls and a jacuzzi/whirlpool garden tub.

Sunny you're missing out......glass of wine, good book, lay back and just relax.
true bubble bath, bottle of wine, candles jazz and a nap, excellent choice
Sounds wonderful, ladies...however, I feel fortunate when I get 3 minutes to myself in the bathroom!
Me too!!
I'm watching "Save my Bath" on HGTV. I found my dream bath -- "Washed out water closet" episode.

Funny you should say that, I picked out the tile this weekend, and the floor will be travertine. Up the walls, shiny white subway tile with a border of shiny white and travertine "diamonds" at the top.
Sounds beautiful, Gryphon. And you seem to have exquisite taste. Pictures as your project progresses, please. ;)

But of course!
Im running into a problem...currently I have a soaking tub. To replace it with a whirlpool was my plan, after hearing the feedback here. BUT...theres no way to get it into the house without ripping a big enough hole into one of the adjoining spaces to hoist it in...which means a much larger project than I had in mind. (And certainly much larger than my wallet had in mind!) So, unless I find a solution, it may have to be a shower and soaking tub.
No problem with that! Just eat beans before you get into the tub and you will have a natural jacuzzi!
You crack me up, kim.
I guess I hadn't thought about that, Gryphon. A project like that could be very costly. :-\
well, I hadnt either, honestly. In the back of my mind, I was thinking that they got the original tub in, it would be no issue to bring in a new one of similar size. But, I forgot that the original tub was probably in place before any windows, drywall, etc. After some measuring, it would be to remove a window in my walk in closet, tear down the wall between there and the bath, and hoist it in that way. Especially since the tub is something I will very rarely use while I live there, its not likely that Ill go to that trouble. A can of beans is much cheaper! LOL!!
Or a compromise, possibly...don't they sell portable jet systems? *shrug* A little cheesey, perhaps?

yeah, Ive got one of those actually. Its fairly good and cost less than fifty bucks. For the two times a year I actually get into the tub, it was worth it.
Right now, I'm thinking a nice cool shower sounds good.
A/C went out again on Friday night, and they say it'll be at least tomorrow before its fixed.
UGH!
Sucks when the AC goes out especially down here. It was close to 95 degrees today. However, a tropical wave bringing some rain is supposed to get here around midnight and it's supposed to rain all day tomorrow.
How's the project coming along, Gryphon?!?
You are the most productive poster we have on this forum...
Ha! I doubt that! I seem to recall quite a bit of productivity when you all moved.
I havent actually started it yet. Im going on vacation with the family next week, and when we get done at the beach, they are going to be coming here for a few days. I didnt want to put a bathroom out of commission when I knew Id be having four visitors soon. Once they are gone, Ill get started. Ive got it all picked out and ordered.
I have decided to just leave the existing tub and shower as is. If I were going to be here forever, Id probably axe the tub and just have a big multi head shower, but since Ill likely sell this house in the next couple years, I didnt think it was worth the expense. Particularly if its next owner would rather see both.
The existing cabinets are white...stark white. I wrestled with whether or not to replace or refinish those, but the tile I found will tie them in perfectly I think.
Good deal! A family vacation, huh?!? Where ya heading?
I actually prefer white cabinets...when we replace our kitchen, we are considering a distressed white cabinet -- more of a cream in color.
Don't forget to take pictures of the project when it ensues.
