Title: Want to forget politics for a while? Here's how:
Post by: libby on November 13, 2016, 05:12:12 PM
At 10:30 P.M. tonight (EST), my TV guide says  that TCM will be showing a movie that absolutely stunned me when I saw it a long time ago. I don't want to say a word about it except that it's classified as Science Fiction, and stars Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson and some others. I promise you you'll stop and think for a while if you do watch it.

Soylent Green, 1973

I've watch it at least 5 times and it really gives a person something to think about as do some of the other so called science fiction movies like Ferenheit 451 and Logan's Run.

"Tuesday is Soylent Green day".  I've watched it, too.  Interesting flick.

Well, I wish you'd been right, because on the actual night of the super moon didn't even get a quick glimpse. It had rained during the day and the night was cloudy.

As for forgetting politics, I'ma tryin'! But it's hard. For the first time in my life, I let myself get emotional about politics: Donald Trump  :spooked: for president? Some of it was/is because I think I am the only one in my entire family who's a democrat.

This was the first election I ever got upset about.  It's still hard to believe people wanted a man that promoted bigotry, racism, and misogyny in to the highest office of our nation.

We generally don't speak politics in my family because it is too much of hot button.  My family is pretty conservative, but myself and two of my siblings are liberal.

I get so sick of the Republicans saying,  the American people want this and they want that.  The American people, the American people want a change, in their Social Security, Medicare.  The American voter is so smart.  All I got to say is.

And, on a lighter non political subject, it's a zoo out there today at the grocery store more than usual. Wonderful day to be out and about though.

The weatherpersons are talking about snow showers so it's to be expected from the local nincompoops.

What the hell is with that?  Every time there is a predicted snow storm the grocery stores run out of eggs, milk, and bread.  Is everyone making french toast during the storm?  ;D

And ass wipe. Every. Time.

Local grocery stores were absolutely jammed today. You'd have thought it was the Black Friday of groceries. The lots were FULL!  :roll eyes:

I recall the blizzard of `67 in Chicago. I was 10 years old and my mother sent me to the store to get bread mid day. I walked through what felt like tunnels of snow it was piled so high. I walked into that local grocery store and the shelves were absolutely bare. It looked like there had been a riot in the place. When I asked the clerk if they had any bread he just laughed and shook his head no.

On my way home I noticed the little Mexican store was open so I went inside. They had bread up the wazoo and were baking more. I asked if I could buy a loaf and the lady smiled at me and handed me two. I gave her my money and she gave it back to me. She said, "Tell your parents it is our gift to your family and where you got it from please. Have fun in the snow!"

I did tell my mother, and she marched my happy ass right back to that store in the snow because she thought I had stolen it. The lady defended me to the very end, and my mother tearfully apologized to me and thanked the lady for her gift. She handed me a gallon of milk on the way out too.

After we had that fresh baked / sliced bread we never bought milk or bread anywhere else for as long as we lived there.

Many years later I went back through that neighborhood one day for work, and that store was still open so I stopped in. The greying and aging lady behind the counter took my money for the bottle of water I had picked up to drink and she asked me how I was. Just general talk, but I asked her how long she had worked at the store. When she replied I asked her if she knew a lady that was working at the store back in 67 when the blizzard came. She smiled and said, yes I do. I was working that day.

I asked her if she remembered a boy that had been given two loaves of bread that day and had his mother come back with him because she thought he had stolen it? Her eyes got really big and lit up and she said, "Oh yes I remember that day! The boys mother was so mad at him and I felt so sorry for him. I gave him some milk to take home once his mother realized he had been telling her the truth."

I smiled at her, reached out my hand to her and said, "I am that boy."

She came out from behind the counter and hugged me with tears in her eyes. I thanked her for her gifts to our family so many years ago, and told her how much I appreciated her defending me to my mother. We talked for about 30 minutes.  Her Name was Ezmeralda Gonzales.  I went by there again a few years later and the store was now a Mexican Wedding Hall; and the neighborhood was even worse than when I had last been there.

One of a mega-ton of childhood memories I have rattling around in my skull. . .

I don't know but you would think the world was coming to an end and they aren't going to have those items.
Palehorse, that is a cool story.
