Title: Christmas gift ideas
Post by: Sandy Eggo on December 14, 2009, 12:10:27 PM
Being home today and kinda stuck watching morning talk programing, I've been able to get some really cool gift ideas. I thought I'd share. Please share yours too.

QuoteHere at ThinkGeek were just wishing for a fully playable guitar built into a t-shirt when along came the Pixie of ROCK... she wailed with face melting guitar solo and *POOF* there it was in our hands... The Electronic Rock Guitar Shirt. We turned on the mini amp, cranked the volume to 11 and started to rock

Good luck with Amazon and their shipping crap. I ordered some books as XMAS gifts for my wife, and they still are not here, and I am told will not be here before XMAS!  Despite all three of them being in stock at the time of the order.

In fact, I ordered a book that a friend recommended to me at the start of December, it was in stock, and it still isn't here either!

Okay, here's an idea for yah.

Ever notice how your knives are so dull you'd be lucky to be able to produce a paper cut with one of them? Used to be I'd get out a butter knife before I'd reach for the cutlery! Until I found one of these babies. Now I fear using my knives they are so sharp!

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?type=product&cmCat=Related_IPL_514318&id=0006453514316a (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?type=product&cmCat=Related_IPL_514318&id=0006453514316a)

On sale for about 20 bucks, get one of these systems and you'll be able to sharpen up those knives yourself in just a couple of minutes.

I've got a similar system, but it is able to sharpen a lot of different style blades, including axes and mower blades. While I still hack at it with a whetstone from time to time, this system allows me to get the job done in a hurry and move on to more important stuff!

Get one and you'll never regret it!

Absolutely.  I don't care how much I need home 'supplies'.....don't freaking buy them for me at Christmas, my birthday or on Valentines day.   I'm not going to be very grateful.   I have video around here somewhere of Christmas 1988, proves the point very well!!!

LOL, if my damn hard drive wasn't locked up, I would gladly post a piece of that video.  I am pretty sure I copied it to the hard drive. But if I didn't...I probably should, it won't last forever on that VHS tape.

I got one of those sporty little cordless vacs a few years ago, and I am completely spoiled. I mean, the damn thing is even an automatic! But the acceleration is acceptable, and the climate control is lush. (I got the canopy, too.)

I'm looking at maybe an Epiphone ....at the guitar center......and suggestions or feedback?...

Get the Ibanez! While Epiphone is a good guitar (owned by Gibson I believe) and you really cannot go wrong with either one, I've never had an Ibanez that didn't play like a dream. Of all the guitars I have ever owned I regret letting the Ibanez models get away from me.

My FIL has an old Epiphone acoustic that he put a new neck and headstock on after he broke it. He loves that guitar, but the Alvarez models both my BIL and I own play far better than it does. One quirk that I have encountered quite often with the Epiphones is with the gear-heads; they seem to slip a lot. Maybe the new ones don't but every one I have ever played has. . . Until I changed them out with a high end after market set.

Just check for cracks where the neck attaches to the body and check to see that the bridge isn't starting to pull up.  Which ever one you choose make sure it has an adjustable neck, truss rod.  To check the bridge hold it in front of you and look down it, finger board away from you, and make sure the body is flat and not bowed.  Hope that helps.

Sweet!  Ibanez has come a very long way since I first encountered them back in the mid 70's, and they were not too shabby back then! A lot of their early model guitars have become highly collectible and command a nice price on the used market today. Given their commitment to  quality and playability I would expect that baby to play quite nicely!

Being new I wouldn't expect any bowing, etc.; but as me says, make sure you look her over to see that nothing happened to it during shipment. . .

That case is a good deal too. Hard shell cases are a bit salty these days!

If they have one of these babies in stock make sure you give it a stroll before you decide. (It comes with the case too). My son has a Fender and it is one sweet sounding and playing acoustic let me tell you. . .

Same price too.

I decided to go with the Yamaha FG700S Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar...I really liked the sound of this and it had a more distinctive sound over the Epiphone that I was looking at....the wood grain on the sides is more unique and has a very high gloss to it....a nice looking guitar......they did not have the Ibanez that I was interested in...he gave me a good deal on a case and threw in some picks....

and this concludeds the Hawk family Christmas shopping season... :biggrin2:

btw, I did the check list that you guys gave me and it least it made me feel as if I knew what I was doing....no cracks, or warping...and even though I do not consider myself a guitar player, I was still able to play a couple of "diddlies" to compare sound.

I know you better have a really high capacity hard drive if you intend to use it much. A friend uses it for his bands music, (The Dockers), and they like it alright last I heard.

In layman's terms does that mean it uses a lot of RAM?  If you mean space I've got lots of that, 250G and only 16% used.

Yes it can, but if you intend to use it to write songs etc., you'll need a hard drive to write to. . .

A little light that plugs into a usb port in your laptop, great if you are trying to work someplace with dim lighting. Office Depot less than $10
