Vice President Joe Biden, well-known for his verbal gaffes, may have finally outdone himself, divulging potentially classified information meant to save the life of a sitting vice president.

According to a report, while recently attending the Gridiron Club dinner in Washington, an annual event where powerful politicians and media elite get a chance to cozy up to one another, Biden told his dinnermates about the existence of a secret bunker under the old U.S. Naval Observatory, which is now the home of the vice president.

The bunker is believed to be the secure, undisclosed location former Vice President Dick Cheney remained under protection in secret after the 9/11 attacks.

Eleanor Clift, Newsweek magazine's Washington contributing editor, said Biden revealed the location while filling in for President Obama at the dinner, who, along with Grover Cleveland, is the only president to skip the gathering.

According to Clift's report on the Newsweek blog, Biden "said a young naval officer giving him a tour of the residence showed him the hideaway, which is behind a massive steel door secured by an elaborate lock with a narrow connecting hallway lined with shelves filled with communications equipment."

Clift continued: "The officer explained that when Cheney was in lock down, this was where his most trusted aides were stationed, an image that Biden conveyed in a way that suggested we shouldn't be surprised that the policies that emerged were off the wall."

In December 2002, neighbors complained of loud construction work being done at the Naval Observatory, which has been used as a residence by vice presidents since 1974.

The upset neighbors were sent a letter by the observatory's superintendent, calling the work "sensitive in nature" and "classified" and that it was urgent it be completed "on a highly accelerated schedule."

Residents said they believed workers were digging deep into the ground, which would support Biden's report of a secret bunker, but officials never confirmed the purpose of the work performed.

The revelation is the latest from Biden, who has a long history of political blunders.

Most recently, he said in a televised interview that if a family member asked him about traveling he'd advise staying away from public transportation or confined spaces to avoid swine flu -- a remark described as "borderline fearmongering" by an airline spokesman.

Some would argue that you're an idiot that needs a muzzle.

If it's a secure bunker, what's it matter if anyone knows it's location.  I know the location of the safe at my bank but I can't get into it.

There would be a major difference if you live in that town.  What might have seemed like an insignificant military base will now be a priority target if something does happen.

Another terrorist attack.

So they're going to fly an airplane into the ground above an inpenetrable bunker?  Let's assume the terrorists were able to build a fully functional atomic bomb and somehow manage to deliver it to the very spot where this facility is and detonate it.  Any idea how much damage the bunker would sustain?  That's right...none, zip, zilch, nada...it was built specifically for that.  Knowing that, whay would it make a better target than, say, the Sears Tower or the Golden Gate Bridge?

This fear-mongering would almost be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

QuoteRumours are rife in Washington about the nature of building work being carried out at the Naval Observatory, which includes the official residence of the vice-president of the United States.

QuoteNeighbours upset by the noise were sent a letter from the observatory's superintendent which said: "Due to its sensitive nature in support of national security and homeland defence, project specific information is classified and cannot be released."

The letter went on to say that the work was urgent and needed to be done "on a highly accelerated schedule".

A spokeswoman for the US Navy told BBC News Online that the work was "an infrastructure and utility upgrade".

This isn't a political blunder, it just simply highlights the cowardice of cheney shivering in his own "spider hole" fearing the next round of anthrax attacks and planning his next assault on the Constitution; coward and traitor.

And your comeback is relevant, how?  Gore didn't occupy a "secret hideout" where the boogie man couldn't get him, nor did he ever trash the Constitution.

It was important that nothing happen to Cheney and not Gore is what I'm saying and Gore hid like they were going to come after him...what a joke.  Bush did not hide away because he had things to take care of and in case something happened to him Cheney needed to be in a safe place so he could take over.  Bush did not trash the constitution either.

Jose Padilla (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Padilla_(alleged_terrorist))

Please people, educate yourselves before you opine.  From the article:

Quote
On June 9, 2002, two days before District Court Judge Michael Mukasey was to issue a ruling on the validity of continuing to hold Padilla under the material witness warrant, President George Bush issued an order to Secretary Rumsfeld to detain Padilla as an "enemy combatant," and Padilla was transferred to a military brig in South Carolina without any notice to his attorney or family.

Is that acceptable to you as an American citizen?

That's clearly a suspension of habeas corpus pure, flat out, and simple.  And even more worrisome, it was done to an American citizen.

LOL!  You should read the content of what you post.

From your article:

Quote

He was convicted of conspiracy, and giving material support to terrorists. Serious allegations to be sure -- each charge carries a maximum penalty of fifteen years in prison -- but these are nowhere near the horrific crimes Ashcroft told Americans Padilla was guilty of. The court case heard no claims of 'dirty bombs', or of attacks being plotted in or against America.

I ask again, is that acceptable to you as an American citizen who may someday be subjected to the same?

I would love to hear any good argument from an American citizen as to when it's acceptable to suspend any of our Constitutional rights.  I posit that there's no acceptable reason.

Yes, under the circumstances I do consider it acceptable.

Our Constitution does not allow for the concept of "situational ethics," me. The law is the law, whether you are a saint or a pedophile priest.

But did you even read the article? Ashcroft said "We have captured a known terrorist who was exploring a plan to build and explode a radiological dispersion device, or 'dirty bomb,' in the United States..."  yet when Padilla was finally brought to trial three and a half years after being arrested "He was convicted of conspiracy, and giving material support to terrorists. Serious allegations to be sure -- each charge carries a maximum penalty of fifteen years in prison -- but these are nowhere near the horrific crimes Ashcroft told Americans Padilla was guilty of. The court case heard no claims of 'dirty bombs', or of attacks being plotted in or against America."

The material support was a copy of a satirical website about building nuclear bombs -- hardly a state secret since it was also published in Time Magazine.

What possible reason can you give for holding this guy for three years without even charging him with a crime? And he was only brought to trial because the Supreme Court was about to issue a Charge Him or Release Him order.
