What did you do at the library?  Unpaid and paid.
Checked books in and out, this was all before computers, put books on the book shelves in the order they belonged. Fiction, nonfiction, reference. That was about it. It is nothing like today's library personnel.who have to be experts in everything.

My wife did did the same thing at our town's library for 13 years.     Library personnel have to be experts in everything?  NOT!

They do nowadays with computers being the wave of the future. The library isn't just about books anymore. Ours has a huge computer room for those who don't have computers to be able to get on the internet. You would be surprised at the number of people who can't get on the computer and work the internet. Who do they turn to? The librarian. Libraries often have huge DVD and audio book collections and again, the librarian has to be knowledgeable to what they have in those. You would be surprised at the people who can't even find the books using the Dewey Decimal System so again they have to the librarian since it is looked up on the computer. Yes, librarians are very much an expert in their field. Most have a Master Degree in Library Science and know the subject they work in.

Actually Troll, you'd be surprised at the number of people who expect librarians to be experts on everything.  ;D

What I should have posted was an expert in the area of the library. I wouldn't expect a librarian to be an expert in say plumbing, necessarily.

But some people do though.  They expect if they need an answer to just about anything, just ask the librarian and they'll have the answer.

Librarian: "How would I know that answer?  Why don't you go to Goggle or YouTube?"  :haha:

We are expected by some patrons to know EVERYTHING, and they get a bit disgruntled with us when we don't have an exact answer for them but instead show them resources to help them.

We're also expected to know how to run every single tablet and phone out there.
