The Apollo 11 Lunar Module Eagle, in a landing configuration was photographed in lunar orbit from the Command and Service Module Columbia. Inside the module were Commander Neil A. Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin. The long rod-like protrusions under the landing pods are lunar surface sensing probes. Upon contact with the lunar surface, the probes sent a signal to the crew to shut down the descent engine.

Where was I?  I was 8, living in Upland, and whatever they were showing on tv was on our tv.
Looks like I've come full circle.

I was driving home from a late band practice in Bluefield and listening on the radio, trying to make it home before they landed. I just made it!

I was 9 years old.  I remember my Mom, Dad, brother and sister standing on our front porch looking up at the Moon after watching this on TV.  It AMAZED me to think that we had a man up there.

Those were exciting times that will live with me forever.

Ole' Duke was the ripe old age of 9 yrs. and 8 months and and watched it on the big screen TV (black & white) right after I arrived home from school. Excitement was in the air for sure on many different levels.

Ol' Duke, you jogged my memory a bit. I didn't get to see the landing, but I did get to see Neil step down.

Did ol' duke have to go to summer school that year?

Maybe there was year round school back then in some places.   I kind of looked at that funny myself...thinking....I'm pretty sure it wasn't a school day for me. LOL

Not in McDowell County WV.  At least I think that's where ol' Duke hails from. Like most of us who grew up in the 60's, I think Duke may have a few holes in his memory.

It's a wonder that those of us who grew up in that era can even remember the moon landing at all, if you know what I mean ...
