I think I liked the Frank, Howard and Don Meridith era the best.....Cosell made a boring game interesting, usually by him and Meridith arguing over something stupid.....but I have great memories of that crew.

One of my favorite writers, Oliver Sacks, practicing physician and author of 10 books, died yesterday. Born in London on July 9, 1933, he came to the United States in 1960.  He was Professor of Neurology at the Albert Einstein College  of Medicine. One of his books, Awakenings, was made into a movie by the same name, starring Robin Williams.

I discovered him while browsing in Barnes & Noble years ago -- the title of his book The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat caught my eye, so I bought it. Read it all the way through without stopping. Some time after that, I took a college writing course and the final assignment was to choose a topic from several authors. One was Sacks, and the book I had was one of the choices.  I wrote about Tourette's Syndrome,  and my teacher wrote me a note saying that paper got me an A for the course.

But back to Dr. Sacks. I am currently reading his book, Musicophilia, A Bolt from the Blue: Sudden Musicophilia,  and would like to quote something that intrigues me:

"Tony Cicoria was forty-two, very fit and robust, a former college football player who had become a well regarded orthopedic surgeon in a small city in upstate New York. He was at a lakeside pavilion for a family gathering one fall afternoon. It was pleasant and breezy, but he noticed a few storm clouds in the distance; it looked like rain.

He want to a pay phone outside the pavilion to make a quick call to his mother (this was in 1994, before the age of cell phones). He still remembers every single second of what happened next: "I was talking to my mother on the phone. There was a little bit of rain and thunder in the distance. My mother hung up. The phone was a foot away from where I was standing when I got struck. I remember a flash of light coming out of the phone. It hit me in the face. Next thing I remember, I was flying backwards."

Then--he seemed to hesitate before telling me this--"I was flying forwards. Bewildered, I looked around. I saw my own body on the ground. I said to myself, 'Oh shit, I'm dead.' I saw people converging on the body. I saw a woman -- she had been standing, waiting to use the phone -- right behind me, position herself above my body, give it CPR....I floated up the stairs, my consciousness came with me. I saw my kids, had the realization that they would be okay. Then I was surrounded by a bluish-white light ... an enormous feeling of well-being and peace. The highest and lowest points of my life raced by me. No emotion associated with these ... pure thought, pure ecstasy. I had the perception of accelerating, being drawn up ... there was speed and direction. Then, as I was saying to myself, "this is the most glorious feeling I have ever had' -- SLAM! I was back."

After two or three weeks he was almost back to normal, back at work, a little forgetful but surgical skills unimpaired, and "he thought it was the end of the matter," something happened. Suddenly there was this insatiable desire to listen to piano music. And that was only the beginning of a non-musician's trip into the world of classical music, as if a door had opened and .... that's as far as I have read.

All of life is a process of testing and initiation, always preparing for a higher level of consciousness -- and illumination. -- John Horn

NBA Moses Malone harvested at 60. I always liked watching him play. Chairman of the Boards if he was called and one of the few back in the day was drafted right out of high school to play pro!

Arguing with Christians is like playing chess with a pigeon.  No matter how good I am at chess, the pigeon is just going to knock over the pieces, shit on the board and strut around like it's victorious.

Moses was a beast and one of my all-time faves. He wasn't a flashy player but a player who packed his lunch everyday and basically just outworked his opponents. He was a pleasure to watch and a heck of a player. They do not make them like Moses anymore.
