Please support your local farmer's markets. Not only will you be getting fresher, unenhanced, in some cases cheaper, quality food, but you'll be helping your neighbors.

Only the free range meats are a little more expensive than in the stores, but I save so much on the fruit and veggies that it probably off-sets the difference that I spend on the meats.

Sandy, I just don't like free range, grass fed beef.  I like corn feed American beef.  Angus being my favorite.  I don't care for Buffalo or beefalo or elk,  I can taste the grass.  I can remember when I was a kid and in the spring you could taste the grass in the milk and if the cows got in the wild onions.  Blah.

There is absolutely nothing better that a Indiana grown tomato, Beefsteak, Big Boy and Early Girl tomatoes.  Those ones grown for canning by Red Gold have skins of leather and there's just something missing.   You are right about Farmer's markets, a good thing.

Thats true about the taste difference, but that's why we created marinades and spices too. . .

I know I used to hate taking a deer from a pine forest for the very same reason. And while I'll take a deer living on the cornfields first, I won't pass up a good one in the pines either. . .

I have a farm near me that has free range cattle.  They grain feed them the last month or so.  I haven't found them to be too "grassy" in taste.

I'm making zucchini bread.  I was given so many.  I need to freeze some of this zucchini!
Take time to smell the roses.

Talking about the taste of deer and the saying you are what you eat.  I worked with a guy who would go up to Canada a then take a sea plane and fly back into the interior and fish.  The told me that the fishing was great, but the camp was full of great big black squirrels.

He ask about eating them, everybody said why eat squirrel when we have all of the walleyes we can eat.  Well, one year he took his fold-up survival .22 rifle with him and when everybody was out fishing he shot a couple squirrels and fries them up.  He said they looked beautiful until he took one bit.  They tasted just like turpentine.  I guess all the squirrel's had to eat was pine cones.

One more thing, I guess up in Alaska there is a lot of waste to a King Crab.  Well, they wanted to feed them to hogs.  The hog just loved them and really grew of them.

They wondered how much crab a hog could before they got to tasting like crab.  They found that hogs could eat about 68% of their diet before they started tasting like King Crab.  Can you imagine, fishy pork.  Blah :puke:

Me too!

We try to take a couple of zucchini and squash along on camping trips to grill on the campfire as a side. Its great!

You obviously know you can shred up all that zucchini and then freeze it right? Get a "foodsaver" sealer and you can keep it frozen for a couple of years, and it will still taste as fresh as the day you shredded it!

I don't like grass fed beef either. Years ago when my inlaws lived in FL and we would go down there the meat was all grass fed and it was awful.

Those vacuum food saver are great, we have had one for years.  I finally got around cleaning the deep freeze and I found a chicken that had been frozen for almost two years.  We thawed it, it looked good and damn, it tasted good.  Two years, I could hardly believe it.

I really need to get one of those. I'm a kitchen gadget junkie so I try to hold off as much as possible. ;D

I need a new blender first. This one is on it's last leg. :sneaky:
