Whew! Just took the trip through Abbs Valley and Pocahontas. Every few years I go that way just for the heck of it -- with friends and/or family -- but never on a motorcycle. My dad once worked in Pocahontas. It's a shame what has happened to the once thriving little town.

Don't forget Horsepen! It's called that because the Indians used that place to keep the horses penned up. The mountains were so steep on both sides that all they had to do was fence in the ends. You can see it a little bit of what I mean as the bike starts its climb up into Abb's Valley at around the 5:00 minute mark.

Goin' back to that area next week. It'll feel good to get some slanted ground under my feet!

I'm jealous. Haven't been back home for almost 2 years. Didn't go back last year. Wanted to, but too much goin' on. As for Horsepen, the area looked familiar -- just didn't realize it was Horsepen. Those upward curves are the kind that somebody once described as having to downshift in the middle of the turn.

I love those straight up and down mountains -- that's how my son described them. He said he thought they were depressing. I never felt that way. There was a steep hill behind our house, and my sisters and I used to wander up and down and around during the summer. Barefooted. There was one big flat rock on top, and I used to lie on my back and look up through the leaves at the sky.

Ole' Duke loves ridin' across Peeled Chesnut down into "Pocy" through the Valley onto Horsepen and over Stony Ridge and into Tazewell. I have navigated those roads many times on various steel horses I have owned over the years and each time I enjoy the ride immensely.

That is good! They announced on the news tonight that Vanderbilt Hospital is really pushing for more states to have helmet laws. Illinois, I believe is pushing for helmet laws based on certain ages!!

Hey Duke! That Stoney Ridge ride is indeed a pretty trip! Have you ever taken the road from Abb's Valley over the mountain into Mudfork? That road will make your sphincter seize up!

Just like seat belts - and drugs, sex, prostitution, etc. -, helmets should be a personal decision.

Those decisions are based on the simple concept of rights which proceed from that question of "do you own yourself?"

I think it should be up to insurance companies.  If you have an accident and receive a head injury by not wearing a helmet, then an insurance company should have the right to not pay for it.  Leave the law out of it.

I vigorously disagree. We've already seen how insurance companies handle such things with the whole healthcare debacle brought to us via deregulation legislation.

They already are canceling homeowners insurance based upon the breed of dog you own, whether or not that dog has had any "incidents". Next they'll be canceling your healthcare over your sexual orientation or some other nefarious reason.

The decision I make is mine to make, and no one else's. Period.

You guys crack me up with your boisterous claims of "governmental invasion" and then turn around and readily offer up your throats to those carrying sharp knives.

That's contract law and they couldn't unless it was a specific contract exclusion and then the cyclist wouldn't buy the policy.

Yes I have Bo D and it is a great ride for sure. Heck sometimes I go through the valley and head to Bradshaw and the War area back towards Welch, cross through Skygusty across 14 back towards the Valley and across 8 mountain into Jenkinjones. Those twisties will tighten up the arse for sure.

There is nothing more enjoyable than having your dog love you.  My dog shows me unconditional love every moment we are together.  I never thought I could love a dog like I do this dog!  He is part of our family.  I look forward to spending time with him every evening.....just had to share, back to your regular forum posting.
