you know I think there is more made of this than what it appears...and I am not making excuses for McChrystal, because he said what he said, but Rolling Stone I"m sure took random statements said in heated conversations....and RAN to the press to release this.....it was poor judgement I think for McChrystal to do an interview with ANYONE, let alone Rolling Stone....I don't think this is a good thing for the WH either, because McChrystal may have MORE (unflattering) things to say IF he leaves his post....and it is also not good for our soldiers during a war time...

Well, the author of the article says there were "plenty of additional remarks, but those were off the record so he left them out".

I certainly believe that at minimum McCrystal and his staff should be brought up on charges under article 88 of the UCMJ:

Quote888. ART. 88. CONTEMPT TOWARD OFFICIALS

Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

http://www.constitution.org/mil/ucmj19970615.htm

Certainly their words and actions are contemptuous and serve to undermine morale and support for the current initiative and the chain of command. I would not be surprised to find out the author has taped recordings of the statements he utilized, and if so these may be used within a potential court-martial proceeding.

There is no excuse for those statements being made to any member of the press or within any public venue, by an officer of the US military or his / her staff, and every single one of them know it. They are insubordinate!

Obama is going to make a statement at 1:30 PM Eastern.  The news outlets are going to carry it live.

BREAKING NEWS: Sources tell NBC that President Obama has relieved Gen. McChrystal of command.

No surprise there.

Yep, yep, yep!

I'm hearing the same things and that McChrystal is not even going to be allowed to go back to Afghanistan to retrieve his personal belongings. They are going to have his stuff packed up and shipped to him.

The interesting part is going to be how many more are going to be relieved over this. I will not be surprised to see several of his aids being brought up before a court martial on article 88 charges. . .

from what I have read, it sounds like his aids was more critical than he was....I bet ya, there will be NO court martial for any of them...

and for the life of me, why would a sound minded general such as McChrystal ever allow someone like Rolling Stone to EVER do an interview?.......that is and was his BIGGEST mistake.

You can bet they will be soundly disciplined by the incoming general, if no one else does anything beforehand. At minimum they've lost their good conduct medals and are going to receive notations in their personnel files.

McC's biggest mistake was forgetting his responsibilities as the leader, and apparently putting an effort to build friendship over his leadership responsibilities. He knew damned good and well his responsibilities under the UCMJ. . . which is why he resigned.

No, his biggest mistake was overestimating his own importance.  Military leaders are not there to make policy; they are there to enforce it.
