I've only had to fire two people in my life and I will have to admit getting a mini rush out of firing the drunk.  Ya know, I've ran into him since and he not only apologized to me for showing up drunk but told me he deserved to be fired and would have done the same if he had been in my place.  I had given him a couple of chances before I lowered the boom though.

Really? I've never fired anybody who didn't know he was endangering his job by his behavior or performance. The fire-ee has received counseling, reprimands, been given a list of expectations and the consequences of failing to meet the expectations. So when I fire someone, he damned well chose it.

Laying someone off breaks my heart.
