On Tuesday, Sept. 8, President Barack Obama will deliver a national address to students via the Web and C-SPAN to encourage students to set high academic goals and to do their best to succeed in school. The address will be broadcast live on the White House Web site ( http://www.whitehouse.gov/live/ ) and on C-SPAN at 12:00 p.m., ET.

I just can't even fathom why some people would not let their child watch this.  Number one, the message is good.  Number two, He is the President and deserves the respect.  And number three, isn't that the "patriotic" thing to do?

If you have a problem with this, please explain to me why.  And don't give me this crap about being a Communist and brain washing children.  That is just radical right bullshit!

I would have a problem with it if it was shown only on channel 1, and I didn't have the ability to also view the speech.

Well we can't cancel day time TV for something like doing well in school.  What about Bo and Hope on Days of our Lives.  They might die and we wouldn't be able to see them.

Well now that you posted it, I can watch the webcast, right?  Not a big deal.   Most of the kids shouldn't be home on that day as it is, they should be in school.  Wait, your kids won't be in school will they? You are tracking out this week aren't you?
Looks like I've come full circle.

Yes mine won't be in school.  We (my school) will be broadcasting it live and then again taped.  I will be showing it when we return.  Parents have the option to keep their kids from watching and we have to provide an alternate activity.  It really pisses me off!

Well now I understand the question.  Some parents tend to shield their kids from politics and other current events.  Their excuse is to let them worry, and let the kids be kids.   Not me, I welcome informed children.   Keeps me from having to teach them myself. LOL

I'm not sure what kind of conspiracy theory someone could come up with in a speech about setting high academic goals.  I suppose someone will come along and tell me I'm naive to think that he won't get political in his speech.  I really don't think he will.

You know, I'm on the fence right now about this.......personally, I think he has NO business, IF it just a time for him to spew his agenda....if it is a ...rah, rah sis boom bah speech about staying out of drugs and getting an education...then fine, but I am skeptical about his motives..I really am.  But with that said, my daughter is informed enough, to where, I have no problem with her on this...we discuss politics quite often, and she is interested in what is going on.....I want to know more about his ... the agenda of his speech personally.....

How would you feel IF, and I say IF, Bush was giving a speech about terrorism and Iraq, and against abortions....and tried to sell his view to a bunch of kids?.......

just a thought.... :)

Ok but I don't see how you can compare Iraq, terrorists, and abortions to getting an education!  I mean do you REALLY think he is going to go on there and talk about health care and the economy?  I mean these are 5 - 18 year olds we are talking about.

I really don't know what he will say.....I think that this is a real bad move for him....his pop rating is dropping like a rock....and this is NOT going to help any.....imo.

See I think it will have the opposite effect.  He is known as a great public speaker, a very motivational speaker.  I think this will have a positive effect on his ratings at the moment.

I see this as not much different than Nancy Reagan and her Say No To Drugs campaign in the 80's.

What the hell?  People don't want the president to talk to us?  That's what I'm getting here.

It's my understanding that the purpose of the broadcast is to encourage the children to get a good education.

Other presidents, including Republican presidents have done something similar if not the same thing.

Either way, I think it's wonderful.

There are quite a few paranoid nutjobs out there who see this a ploy.

Kim, you absolutely wouldn't believe some of the absolute BS that I've been reading from those who are opposed to this speech to the children.  Despite the fact that Republican presidents such as Reagan and George H.W. Bush have done the exact same thing, many of the nutjobs are opposed to this just because it's Obama.

My thought is that you would have your kids lined right up to hear whatever ole' Dumya had to say.
